Sorry, boring but has anyone recently researched the cheapest mobile phone without a contract or without a long contract?

Dh and I have a c£50 a bill each a month and have decided it's ridiculous since we mainly use it to speak to each other during the day. We're both on Orange and they have offered me various inducements to stay but with an 18 month contract which I do not want. I have a phone, I just want to pay a standard amount a month, less than £50 preferably. I don't need web or anything, just calls.

Any ideas? Have looked at O2 Simplicity snce it's a rolling contract you can cancel at any time but any views welcome, TIA.

I think some systems give you cheap calls between family members, all on the same network ... just a sec ...

Shhhh · 02/03/2008 21:25

can you not go onto sim only with orange.? Mum is on payg and I upgraded here mob a few weeks ago...they tried to get me to change her to sim only...

Means that you pay for calls on payg basis BUT cheap asaik...no upgrades though...

Only 1 months notice need to cancel as well...

Hi, WWW (smarmy guilty smile!)(I will email you soon, I WILL)

We seem to be leaning more and more towards O2 PAYG - with them if you top up £10 a month you get 300 texts plus the £10, plus you can add this bolt-on

so if you both have O2 you're laughing (and when DS is old enough for his own phone you can put him on O2 too )

O2 bolt-ons listed here

We have just bought this bargain phone for both DSs - got DS2's off ebay, without any previous experience of it, he is thrilled with it so I've just ordered one for DS1 as well (both DSs have lost their previous phones in the last 2 weeks )

But if you are happy with whatever phones you have, just get them unlocked!

WendyWeber · 02/03/2008 21:37

Oh, instead of 300 texts you can have something like 100 minutes; and either way, your first 3 minutes a day outside freebies cost 25p a min, thereafter they are only 5p a min.

(You would have to look back at previous bills and see how many mins you use. Or look at all the different bolt-ons)

Oh good grief, I've just checked out the O2 Simplicity tariffs - they look fantastic!

£15 a month gets you 200 mins, 400 texts and unlimited O2 to O2 Calls; £20 a month gets 400 mins & 1000 texts plus unlimited O2 to O2.

DH, DS1 and DS2 are all on O2 now, and I will be too when my current rubbish £15 a month deal (75 texts & 125 mins with Green Mobile) is up shortly - I bought a basic Sony Ericsson on O2 for a tenner off ebay last week, I will be switching straight onto Simplicity

WW, thank you (do you owe me an email? No worries!) I do think those O2 Simplicity ones look good and if dh and I both get them could be good.

Thank you and you Shhhh and NQC

we have o2 where u top up £10 a month and get 300 messages free, but you can change it to be a mix of minutes and texts, and ifyou top up more you getwe have had it for years and never had a problem, and also you still have the £10 as credit so not as if its costing you for the minutes/texts,
keep a lookout on the internet as o2 are usually offering free sim cards,

annemarie29 · 09/03/2008 11:17

o2 is who dh and i both use. it's so cheap that we actually got our ds1 a phone with o2 as well. really recommend them. plus they give you extra freebies such as the reward scheme where you get 10% of your top ups back every 3 months.

WideWebWitch · 09/03/2008 12:27

Marvellous, in fact I am going to ring O2 NOW and get one of the Simplicity deals
Should save us about £80 a month.

If you're a Virgin Media customer you can get a phone + 100 mins + 100 texts a month for £10 or keep your phone and get 300 mins + 300 texts per month. You can do it by direct debit or pay as you go so if you use up the minutes they don't just take the money you have to top up again or wait until next month to get next lot of minutes.
