metal detector will it be a waste of money?

I would love one for ds1, it would be right up his alley. Will watch this thread with interest.

My friend and her dh were sitting outside a bar on their honeymoon, watching loads of people with metal detectors combing the beach. My friend nicked a few teaspoons from the bar and buried them up and down the beach, then sat watching the metal detector people getting all excited, and then digging up a spoon

Yes - we have that one! DS asked & asked for one for Xmas. To be honest it doesn't seem as good as I'd thought it would be (although we haven't tried it outside). He's used it to find coins we've hid under a rug but that's about all.
Make sure your DS knows that there are limited places he can use it & see if he's still keen.

We're on our second metal detector. I don't think the ones for children are that good really. They're not very sensitive and they seem to break quite easily. I think they're in the same category as digital cameras: not much good as a children's version, you're better off buying a cheap adult version. HTH.
