my baby is nearly 6 months but in 9-12month old clothes..he was big at birth!!! and is fast growing out of his baby car seat..his head is to the top of the seat and ive puit him in another model that seems a bit roomier ..he can sit up and is very strong..can he go forward facing yet as hes over 9kg and the forward ones say from 9 kg upwards but do you think its better to leave him be or move him

I would leave him in the infant one. I left DS in his until he was a year. I understand it's as much to do with head control and neck muscle development as weight.

I went to a road safety lecture when I was pregnant with DS and I remember the lady saying the longer they can stay in the infant one the better. If their head starts to get close to the top of the infant seat move them up but if not keep them in, she recommended a year but DS was not a big baby.

I would move him up. If he can sit unaided and can hold his head imo he's ready.

Its not safe if any part of his body can overhang the 0+ car seat in case of an accident.

DS went into his from around 9 months iir. He preferred facing the way his sister does.!!!

hes very long in the body hence the fact at this age his head is at the top..like i said he is big 98% centile!! in length and weight

Just seen the bit you wrote about his head reaching the top!!!

bambi06 · 15/02/2008 15:29

is there a safety site that recommends/gives advice that will give safety advice regarding this do you think

Check RoSPA for safety.

Sorry, on my way out, no time to link.

LIZS · 15/02/2008 15:46

as late as possible, much safer rearwards. However from www.childcarseats.org.uk/faqs/index.htm#feet

"Q: My baby is not yet 9kg in weight, but his feet are dangling over the end of his child seat. Should I move him into a group 1 forward facing seat?

A: No. Child restraints are tested and approved for the child's weight not age. Provided that the top of your child's head does not extend above the back of the seat, s/he should remain in the rearward-seat until s/he is over 9kg and can confidently and comfortably sit up for a reasonable length of time (30 minutes or more is a good guide).

Do not rush to move your baby into a forward-facing seat, rearward-facing is safer and gives better protection to their head, neck and spine in a crash."

Had to respond bambi as I also have an exceptionally tall child (she has long since sailed past the 99.8th percentile) and had to move her into a second stage seat at 7 months and just over 9 pounds . There's a link to the ROSPA advice here which says you should move them once the top of their head is higher than the top of the seat. IMO she is far safer in the second stage seat than she was with her head flopping over the top of the first stage one.

talktothemoths · 15/02/2008 21:49

9 kilos obviously

Piffle · 15/02/2008 21:54

we've just had to switch ds2 too. He's 11 mths very tall head was popping over the top. Can't say he is happier though. He is over 9 kgs

Tutter · 16/02/2008 14:04

i'm confused now

was told by britax customer services that ds1 would be safe in a group 1 seat until hi eyeline was above the top of the seat - the top of his head has long been above the top of the seat

but he's skinny, and so only just at the min weight for a group 2

ds2 is another tricky customer. only 7mo (in fact, not til monday) but already weighs 10kg. can sit unaided but topples quite quickly. so i have no idea whether he's safer in his baby carrier or in a group 1 seat

My son was 98th percentile+ for height and weight (thats over 11kg at 9 months). I kept him in an infant carrier for the full nine months. It was a britax one and the upper weight limit was 13kg. It didn't say anything about the length. His feet were up the back of the seat but his head wasn't over the top.
