Does anyone know about DVD formats in the States?

My friends are emigrating to the USA in a few weeks and I want to make them a DVD of memories that they can take with them. However I'm a bit clueless about these things and know that UK videos don't play in the States and was wondering about DVDs..... do I need to get special ones or can I just use a normal DVD-R like I would for playing over here? I am totally technologically un-minded and help form a knowledgeable mumsnetter would be fab!

in the states they use NTSC dvds not PAL

It says what they are on the side of the pack I think.

Your friend will have to get a multi-region dvd player. She'll probably want to get one anyway, if they have any DVDs they won't be able to play them otherwise. Multi-region players don't cost much more than single region and you can get them in any electronics store.

DVDs playable in the US are labelled region 1, the UK is region 2.

THanks for the advice, I'll ask them if they are planning on buying a multi region dvd player!
