best alternative to gas hobs

I have always had gas but was just wondering if there is am alternative which has that level of control

Induction hobs are meant to be the bees knees! Mil just got one and says its brill.

They have the same level of control as gas, are more efficent as they only heat the saucepan area(not the sides like gas) quick to heat up and easy to clean.

They work by having some type of magnet in them that when a induction saucepan is situated on top they cause a reaction that heats up.
Wish I had bought one instead of a gas hob that is a nightmare to clean

thanks kbaby that is really helpful.I have seen all the different types but didn't know which was best as only know gas!I have seen a house I like which would mean re siting the kitchen and don't think gas would work
