Will PHEVs have a dramatic fall in secondhand value over the next few years?

We are debating whether to get the xc90 plug-in hybrid (their new model gets something like 40 miles on a single charge) or if we should just wait another year and go straight to their new electric version. Our current car is a tough diesel that gets great MPG and never breaks down, so whilst I know we need to move to something better for the environment, I am hesitant to relinquish it until I know that our next car will have similar longevity.

Do you think buying a new PHEV is a bad idea given how fast tech is moving, or do you think secondhand ones will hold their value decently if we decide to swap for electric after 3-4 years… Will people still be wanting to buy hybrids if the electric ones all have much better range by then?

I would have thought so Blaggertyjibbet as most people don't have parking at home where they can easily charge an electric. There is a facebook group for electric car owners- that wouldn't be the one to post on as they will all tell you to buy an all electric but suspect there would be one for hybrid owners too which may be worth joining. For what its worth I have an older low range all electric and happy with it- I am hoping I can replace the lithium battery in the future to extend its life.
