I'm thinking about getting a new sewing machine. What type do you recommend - I'm thinking about a Bernina - but not sure - due to expense. The main use will be children's clothes. Thinking about an overlocker also - but have never used one - are they good? Thanks for everyones help I'm used to an old Singer that does four different stitches - so all the new machines seem so fab.

I've got a Bernina and it's great. My mum uses an overlocker and swears by it- depends how much use you have for it really. Well worth it if you do a lot of sewing

Thanks PF - thought the overlocker could be good for getting clothes made faster? - they look so complicated though. Don't do much sewing at the moment but have big plans

The overlocker is great for doing the seams before you stitch them. personally I just use zigzag but the overlocker is better. If I had a lot of use for it then no doubt i'd get one (also lack of space here)

A friend of mine has a JAnome sewing machine which is fab and not ridiculously expensive- does a fair bit of complex stitching
