My ds was given one when he was 2 (he was too young then really) but he LOVES it now and plays pirates all the time, although he has managed to break the mast off which I have had to superglue back together twice - but that could again be an age thing. It is plastic, and does have small parts, which I have had to confiscate from my 3 year old, but I think in a year or 2 even they would not be a problem. What little boy (or girl for that matter) doesn't like the idea of pirates - go for it .

Posey · 11/01/2008 17:33

Ds plays with his friend's regularly. He has 2. Apparently the playmobile one (3940) at £59.99 is brilliant. The other one he has is "rubbish", but he didn't see it on your list.
Sorry not to be more helpful.

TsarChasm · 11/01/2008 17:34

We did ! I can't see the exact one we got on you link. It was a spooky one with skeleton pirates. Playmobile I think.

I got it from Argos during the year for some silly amount, like £5 in a sale.

It's been a huge hit. He loves it. They were doing piratey things at school recently and ds really got into the whole subject. It was fairly easy to assemble (ie even I could do it) but it has lots of nice details. It's quite big too.

TsarChasm · 11/01/2008 17:35

Ds is 6 btw

paulayatesbiggestfan · 11/01/2008 17:37

rantmum thankyou for that

I think Playmobil is definitely the way to go
We have a couple of others - a wooden one where the bits fall off/ break and another plastic one that is just a bit boring.

Playmobil ones are fabulous and so well thought out and there are so many lovely little bits to add onto things and play with. 6 is the perfect age for a really good playmobil ship

VictorianSqualor · 11/01/2008 17:39

DS has this one he loves it.

Rantmum · 11/01/2008 17:39

Sorry - only saw the one at the top - that is the one that ds has. I LOVE the wooden ones, though - I would have bought one of those if he hadn't received the gift one. But ds is younger than your ds...

paulayatesbiggestfan · 11/01/2008 17:40

ooh posey thankyou!

tsarchasm thanks so much for that

Yes, we've got no 11 (large playmobil) + no 6 (barbarosa)

I bought the playmobil off ebay with all the stuff for £20 + P&P Ds loves it! It's also great when friends come round asthere is plenty for them all to do. NOt much arguing which is fab. Ds 3.9 btw.

Barbarosa - also fab but dog ate bits of it (hence we bought a new one)

There are more comaprtments, things to do with the playmobil one + you can add sets as and when you want.

Lizzylou · 11/01/2008 17:46

I got DS1 (3.75) a Playmobil Pirate ship and lots of extra pirates off Ebay for Christmas and added the Playmobil Pirate Chest and an ELC Sea playmat (about £6)....he loves it and I have to say so do I. Playmobil is fab and there is so much to do (love the cannons personnally!).

Definite hit here!

paulayatesbiggestfan · 11/01/2008 18:05

thanks so much everyone - its a difficult time for birthdays and i ws so unsure. looks like playmobil is the way to go ( as ever!) shame amazon does not actually sell them - just marketplace - so will have to look elsewhere

We got our 4 year old twins the Le Toy Van ones, can't praise them enough, they adore them, they're fab!!!!!!!!!! I don't know how much playmobil you've got but it was lovely to have something different, something wooden and quite sturdy.

1 had the Barbarossa the other the Kings Galleon, we got given money from several people so they had the pirate buccaneers fort thing too, they adore the wooden cannons which fit on either. The fort has got trap doors, under water nets loads of detail. You can get a treasure island, raft, playmat etc. The Papo pirates that go with it are brilliant. They had 5 each but their local toy shop sells them so they'll be good pocket money things later on.

We got the ships and fort from Wonderland Models lovely service and cheaper than anywhere else(I did loads of research). They sell the Papo figures too but Letterbox had good little bundles of them so got them from there. Whatever you do check the model you buy has the wooden cannon as they are the best bit as far as my boys are concerned. They fit nicely and look lovely on their shelves, had some lovely play too all terribly blood curdling and the TV has nearly copped it from wooden cannon balls several times but I just love it.

I love all this boy stuff.

I'm trying to avert my eyes from the Le Toy Van castles too gorgeous and we don't have the house room. May have to get Playmobil then(next year) as at least we'll be able to break them up.

I have been looking at getting my ds a playmobil pirate ship for his birthday ... they seem to have both the cheaper one and the more expensive one at the entertainer in their sale here. My ds is only 3 but I think he will love it - does anyone think it is worth getting the bigger/more expensive one or is the cheaper one fine for a young one?

chocolateshoes · 11/01/2008 20:00

DS got a lovely wooden one form WHSmiths. Don't know if they're still doing them

chocolateshoes · 11/01/2008 20:02

ohh yes they'er in the sale £19.99. Really good. Sorry can't do likn!

lunavix · 11/01/2008 20:02

A friend got ds the megabloks pyrates ship for Christmas www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3872709/Trail/C%24cip%3D1500006108.Toys%2Band%2Bgames%3EC% 24cip%3D1500006856.Clearance%2Btoys%2Band%2Bbaby%3EC%24cip%3D1500006915.Clearance%2BAction%2Bfigures %2Band%2Bplaysets%3EFC%24Character%3DMegabloks+-+Pyrates.Megabloks%2B-%2BPyrates.htm for £4.99 (!) he LOVES it. It's actually like lego not megabloks, teensy pieces, but ds (he'll be four in April) is very sensible, never been the child to stick pieces up his nose lol. Or swallow them!

It's meant to be 8+, I can only see that cos a littlie wouldn't be able to put it together (two big pieces for the ship and about 15 little ones then it's done) and like I said ds is sooo chuffed especially as it's lego as that's what the big kids play with!

paulayatesbiggestfan · 11/01/2008 20:06

le toy van milamae - never heard of it must google ...we have a LOT of playmobil with 4 boys!

OP posts:
MilaMae · 11/01/2008 20:14

If you go on the website it's the Papo(think it must be a sister company) figures you want not the wooden doll type ones.

LunarSea · 11/01/2008 21:35

The WH Smith one looks good. I'd be tempted by that if we didn't already have the Barbarossa one. Might get th4e wooden bus on that site to put away for ds2 when he's a little bigger though.
