Leappad with writing pencil - am I asking for trouble?

We were going to get ds (3) a leappad for christmas - but got seduced by the new one which has a 'magic pencil' which writes.
The assistant in toysrus wouldn't let us open the box to see how it worked - and there wasn't one on display. Our worry is that if the pencil isn't that 'magic' that ds will write all over the expensive leappad books...so..before we open the box and make our new one un-returnable..has anyone got one of these, and is the pencil really magic or could it be used to write all over the wrong bits of the page?
Ta muchly.

Bumping this up top the top for you, I dont have one but i do have something similar from years ago that beeps if your on the right letters or answer whatever...no idea how it works but theres a ball instead of ink and you cant draw on anything else with it as it really is a magic pen so to speak!!

Answering my own question - the power of google has been greater than the power of Mumsnet - the pencil is not magic , it has a retractable point so that it can be used to write with or just as a 'normal' leappad pointer-style pen....so we are taking our leappad back to exchange it for one less likely to end in tears.
