Best trainers for running\walking

I have just re-enrolled at my gym (after a six year gap) so am very out of touch. I intend to mostly use the running machines and perhaps take an aerobics class and was wondering what would be the best kind of trainers.

Go to a proper running shop and ask for advice there. People have very different running styles and what suits one person will damage another. A good shop should assess your gait.

When I started running I went just to a JJB sport and picked some Asics off the shelf. Now asics are a good brand of running trainers but I overpronate (but didn't know at the time), the shoes were neutral and I was in agony with my knees for months and had loads of physio.

So now I have motion control trainers. Even then my first pair of expensive Nikes didn't suit me and rubbed my arches so I've had to replace them with Brooks.

Also you need different trainers for running and for aerobics, but if you only get one pair get a running pair. You will do more damage if you run in aerobic trainers then vice versa.
