Does US size kids clothes differently? Can anyone help?

I was in NY ealier in the year - got lots of clothes from Century 21 for Christmas pressies.

I'd thought I was well covered for my two 5 year old nieces... but now I've gone through the stuff, I'm wondering if I bought the wrong sizes. My Dd is 3/4 to add to the confusion - but I was completely positive I bought plenty of stuff suitable for 6 year old girls.

Blouse Tommy Hilfiger Size 4 /4T
DKNY jersey pink blouse Size 4 /4T
RED POLO FRENCH TOAST SIZE 4 looks small!
pink top round neck FRENCH TOAST SIZE 2 looks bigger than red one!

4T=suitable for age 3-4 yo, as a rule, but indiv manufacturers can have their own sizing schemes (just like in the UK Next comes up skinny and Adams comes up huge, typically).

I think I would have bought age 8 for 6-year-olds - I thought US sizes were a bit small.

I must have left my brain on the plane!

Thanks for the answers. Luckily we've a 3 y.o. and a 2y.o. and bump on the way, i the extended family, so stuff won't go to waste.
