Nikon D40 - anybody got one?

It seems an amazing bargain for £297 at amazon - have read a couple of reviews and obviously it's not one of the singing dancing digital SLRs, but I was thinking of getting one of the pseudo SLRs, like this Fuji for £105

The Fuji has a 10x optical zoom but the Nikon only comes with an 18-55 lens, ie 3x - but then IME, with a compact digital, zoom pics except in brilliant light are rubbish anyway.

HEEEEELP!

Not an expert but I have a very similar Fuji - S5500 and it's really good - I've been very pleased with it.

This is mine

Definitely recommend it. We've got one and LOVE it!

Have taken some really amazing photos of DS since we've had it. The only negative (tiny negative) is that you take alot more photos than a normal digital camera as it's so quick, so be prepared to cull your unwanted ones.

helpmaboab · 12/12/2007 21:27

Don't know much about it but my dad has one and is very happy with it (he's a pretty keen amateur photographer). He did loads of research and that one and a Canon one seemed to be the top entry level SLRs. Having played around with it the best thing is that there's absolutely no delay between pressing the button and the photo being taken which always drives me nuts about most of the autoimatic digital cameras i've come across. Sounds like a great price - think he paid over £400 for it a year or so ago. Sorry can't help more but will bump for you at least!

woodenchair · 12/12/2007 21:27

Just realised you were asking about which one to get and I didn't say which one. doh!

We have the D40

WendyWeber · 12/12/2007 21:33

Oh, thanks, moo - is that what you took your squirrel pics with?

Trouble with these Fuji Sbignumbers is that there are so many of them and they seem to bring out a new one, replacing an older one, every couple of months! lisad123 recently bought the S5600 I think it was and posted some pics on her profile and they are fab, but that one seems to have vanished from amazon now and so does yours - would you think the 5600 replaced the 5500, and now the 5700 has replaced the 5600? They are all 10x zoom but yours is 4mp, the 5600 5mp and the 5700 7mp

I think the fake SLRs are smaller than the real ones, plus the lenses don't come off (??) so the inside stays clean.

I don't know what to dooooooooo

Ooooh, woodenchair and hmb, thank you! You weren't there when I started replying to moo.

Do either of you have an extra lens or do you find the 18-55 is powerful enough?

I've got a D40 and I love it. Also, I can use all my old wetfilm Nikon lenses with it, and for some reason I get more zoom with the digi - no idea why, but I do.

Mine was £400 a year ago - DH thinks he bought it for "us" but it's miiiine all miiiine

spanielsmom · 12/12/2007 21:43

I think the D40 is only £269 at Currys and Jessops with a £30 cashback offer from Nikon - you may want to check them out.

spanielsmom · 12/12/2007 21:44

I know that I am planning to get it for my dh for Christmas - hopefully he will love it.

myrrhthamoo · 12/12/2007 21:44

Yes, I just had a look for mine on amazon and only a marketplace seller has one, somewhere called bargian [sic] bucket or somesuch. I couldn't buy from somewhere with a spelling mistake in their name .

Yes, it is the one I took the squirrel pics with - I do really like it, there isn't that annoying delay when you click the shutter that you get with a lot of digital cameras, it's pretty good for redeye (or lack of) and the zoom is plenty adequate for my amateurish purposes.

Have to admit to hankering after an SLR though (just left that screen up in the hope that dh would notice but he's keeping schtum). Go for the Nikon.

woodenchair · 12/12/2007 21:45

We use the lense that came with it and I'm really happy.

Like I said we've got some great headshots of DS but without having to be too close, great detail and the colour are very vibrant. DP thinks they are too vibrant but I like it.

I like it because it's easy to use and you can change to macro using a dial rather than the camera software.

You have to use view finder to take the photo, the screen is only used to see the picture data, and to review the picture after you have taken it.

WendyWeber · 12/12/2007 21:46

about using your old lenses, Little - I have a Canon 35mm SLR which would be no use at all with this!

Thanks, sm, I will check that out
