Do any charities offer VIRTUAL Xmas cards?

You know the kind of e-card thing you can get via various sites, but paid for with a donation, IYKWIM. Made a donation and sent a Xmas mass-email last year instead of sending cards, but would prefer to send a proper virtual card sponsored by a charity if that's available ... ?

Aha - sounds like Barnardo's are on the case - but haven't quite got it sorted yet ...

Anyone know of any others?

Ah, feeling sorry for you all by yourself, am interested to in this so will keep an eye on this thread.

Zinger · 12/11/2004 18:29

Hello pepsi, thanks for taking pity on me

I see Great Ormond St Hospital did this last year but can't find anything about their plans this year - will email them

Yes, I know what you mean - like those. Friends of the Earth do them as well..

JuniperDewdrop · 14/11/2004 20:04

I know it isn't the same but I just bought a virtual gift for SIL. She's going to be rolling in it by Chrimbo so I couldn't think what else to get? I got it from Traidcraft and they send you a letter explaining the gift, a capiz angel and a beautiful hand made card.

Zinger · 15/11/2004 09:44

Oh yes, the FoE ones are quite good julen - pity they don't do Xmas ones but they'd do! I do think the charities are missing a trick here - so many of us would love to save trees and time by doing this, and make a donation in the process.

what a good idea...
save on paper, and help those charities too.

cockle · 19/11/2004 13:28

Exactly! I'll be doing as Zinger suggests this year - maybe the World Land Trust ones if Barnardo's / GOSH don't get their acts together soon

julen · 19/11/2004 16:34

I found a new one: this is an american site that donates money generated from their advertisers to environmental good causes. You have to register to get to send their cards though.

cockle · 19/11/2004 17:09

Aha, interesting

andaSOPPYnewyear · 02/12/2004 14:26

Just had an email from a friend who's sponsoring a child with the money she'd otherwise spend on Xmas cards - great idea - although I must admit I'd have to dig a bit deeper than usual in my piggy bank to do this

HOORAY! \link{http://www.ecelebrations.com/cardxm2004/action/home;jsessionid=1067CDEAFB1571F4259869DA084EE834\Great Ormond Street} - perfect.

fruitcake · 06/12/2004 14:03

Does anyone know which (if any) UK charities will deliver cards to Europe? Thanks.

greenwellys · 06/12/2004 15:42

Hi all

I'm new to the site, but have spoken to the Mumsnet editorial team before responding to this thread. They said that it would be OK to tell you about a project that I'm working on for Gt Ormond Street Hospital.

I'm trying to raise awareness of their fund raising charity Christmas e-cards.

The cards can be found
www.merrychristmas.co.uk

For a minimum donation of £5, you can send as many e-cards as they like, ranging from exploding santas, Sex pistols anarchicxmas songs, ice skating penguins to more traditional festive scenes.

This week we should be adding cards designed by some celebs who are supporting the campaign including McFly, the cast of Hollyoakes, Jamelia, 411, Pete and Geoff from Virgin Radio and Lorraine Kelly.

I hope that you don't mind me posting. We really appreciate your support, so if you can tell as many people as you can about the cards, we'd really appreciate it.

Thanks for your time.

Greenwellys (Michelle) :)

bahhumbug · 06/12/2004 15:47

hi greenwellys, I beat you to it - see 3 posts down Wink

greenwellys · 06/12/2004 15:52

You lot are really cool....this was only launched last Friday!

Would be interested to get your feedback if any of you decide to donate and use the service.

Thanks

Greenwellys

bahhumbug · 06/12/2004 16:00

using it as we speak, greenwellys - it's fab so far :)

Just one thought: as far as I can see, you can only personalise the cards if you're sending them to one person at a time - it would be great if you could set it up so that the sender can add a personal greeting ('happy christmas everyone, hope you don't mind getting a virtual card this year, I'm donating the money to GOSH instead') to send to multiple recipients.

bahhumbug · 06/12/2004 16:08

Actually, maybe you CAN do that - just trying ....

bahhumbug · 06/12/2004 16:22

Wahay, you can - just sent mine off to a whole batch of people in one go. So you save trees AND time!!

This is officially perfect.
