As DP and I have christmas birthdays we have decieded to splash out on a new TV after Christmas. We only have a small living room so don't want a massive screen - 262 would be ideal. Problem is Dp has been told that Plasma is the way to go but they are all really huge. He says LCD have awful shadow - is that true? I know nothing about TVs but we do need to replace our 20 yr old hand-me-down Sony. What have you got and would you recommmend it?

We have an LCD. I'm not sure what size it is. It is quite big, I know you can buy plasmas the same size.

Not sure exactly what your DP means about shadow. DH is quite very anoraky about these things (I'm in the don't really give a toss category). So all I can say is if DH picked LCD over plasma - and if he had preferred plasma he would have bought it - then it must be OK. Ours is an LG btw. Maybe you could buy one of those magazines that compare them, they are usually quite accurate about best buys.

We have a Samsung, 26" - I think it's LCD - it's fab. Cost around £599 about 9 months ago, I think.

If you get too close to it you can see the pixels or a shadow, but if you're sitting a normal distance away it's brilliant. I would say that means that you shouldn't get a big one if you are sitting close up.

We have a Samsung 26" LCD too (won in a comp) and it's great, the size is perfect and never noticed a shadow.

hmmmmm.....thank you. Will look nito Samsung. Am thinking the plasma thing is a bit of a snob thing maybe? I really don't care much in some ways but don't want to spend a fortune on plasma because DP has been told its on the only way, & certainly don't want great massive screen.

Plasma is good for fast-moving action, so if you and your DH watch a lot of football etc then you want plasma, for everything else you want LCD

We've got a Samsung 1080p which is better resolution than a 1080i (standard LCD/plasma) so doesn't look so blurry, although we did pay extra for it (it's a 40" and cost £800ish rather than about £650).

Try and do as much research about it as possible - there's a lot of information out there, but there's also a lot of overpriced TVs as well!!

Good luck
