Can anyone recommend a good photo printer to print photos off our digital camera?

Apologies if this has been asked recently but I did a quick search and couldn't see anything?

We have decided to get a printer to print the photos off our digital camera. We have a Nikon Coolpix which uses the Compac Flash cards.(?spelling.)

We won't be printing hundreds of photos, just a few each week at the most. We don't want to pay a fortune, but nor do we want to get an unreliable "bargain."

Both dh and I are fairly inept with all things technical so need something fairly simple and user friendly. Ideally we want something that the camera card can go straight into, as well as connecting to the pc.

Thanks in advance

I've got the same camera as you, and an HP photosmart 335 photo printer. The camera card goes into the printer, and it prints out nice photos - I think the quality is just as good as the ones I printed at Boots. I don't know how much it cost, though, cos it was a birthday present. It does have a few functions on the printer, including a red eye reduction option - use the latter with care, otherwise you get pictures of people with blue mouths! I usually buy good quality photo paper to put in it - cheap paper does give poorer prints.

We have a Lexmark P4350, which is an all-in-one photocopier/scanner/printer/photo printer and it works fine, but it is actually cheaper to get the photos from Snapfish at www.snapfish.co.uk when you factor in the cost of photo paper. You just upload your photos to their website, pay 10p per print and they arrive in the post the next day.

Printers may be cheap, but the ink refills are usually ££££, and you have to add in cost of decent photo paper too. Lots of online printers now, have used Photobox but there are others...

They just reviewed some on The Gadget Show! (Finished at 9pm). They loved the Epsom Picturemate but had an expensive model (The 290) but said you can get a cheaper model that prints as well without the CD Rom Drive for half the price (so less than £100). It was reviewed with a professional photographer!

Second what milliways said - I watched the gadget show too

Enter the competition for £1 and win one (as well as 100 other gadgets!)

Actually, don't enter it, the prizes are mine

Don't get this one despite the glowing Amazon reviews. We've just got one and are very disappointed.

The colours look wrong, the printing quality isn't very good, and it ran out of ink after printing only a few photos. It is very easy to us though.

The HP one it replaced was much better.

Too late

I have one of these A Picturemate 500 and never had a problem with it. Its great

Unless you really, really, really need photos instantly, don't bother. Sign up for the (Jessops) Snapfish service and get 'em done online. Only 10p per print, or 8p if you punt a bit of money up front, which is much cheaper than running a home printer. Better quality too. And you can pick them up in any Jessops branch, free of charge.

Thanks everyone for all of your advice. It is much appreciated.

Will chat to dh about whether to get one or stick with ordering online.

That's assuming there still is a Jessops branch anywhere near - the one closest to me has just closed down, along with 80 others.

MuffinMclay · 04/12/2007 19:16

There is still a Jessops in St Albans, I think.
