tumble dryers - making sense of energy ratings etc.

Our dryer is on it's way out - I'd like to order a new one before the old one gives up the ghost completely but am struggling to make up my mind.

I subscribe to Which? online and they have just done a test, which is useful. What is a bit baffling is that apparently condenser dryers are less energy efficient than vented dryers, but the only best buy dryer to get an 'A' rating is a condenser, some other condensers get a B, but the vented ones only have a C rating. Can anyone explain this please?

We've got a vent in place so I'd be happy with a vented one, my main consideration is good performance and low energy consumption.

bump - I know this really boring, but maybe there's an energy rating nerd out there?
