Talk to me about Geomag, Magnetix and Supermag...

I always have bought Geomag as it's the best quality. DSs do have some Magnetix and the rods and balls are larger than Geomag so, although they work, they're not 100% compatible.

What about Supermag? I wouldn't bother with it but I saw a Tardis set in Toys R Us last week and DSs would love it! I don't want to get it if it's a different size to Geomag.

We've got Geomag and Magnetix. Never heard of Supermag. Ds1 doesn't mix the two sets tbh. When he was tiny we had three different wooden trainsets - none of which quite fitted together properly/easily. The result was he got very frustrated with them and they didn't come out much. So I guess I'm asking how creative are your dss? Would they be able to work around the differences? Otherwise I think either your pressie or some of the stuff you already have will fall by the wayside.

ds1 brought himself a Supermag set in netto today because he is DESPERATE for some and it was only £3.99.
The balls have screw in holes in them and some of the bars are magnetic, but some are screw in. It doesn't seem as good as the Magnetix I have seen but for that sort of money you wouldn't expect it.
It has 2 sizes of balls, don't know how it compares though.

Can I ask why Geomag is better than Magnetix, I have just sent the inlaws the Argos Magnetic link that someone posted on here earlier as a potential xmas present for ds.

We got some of the Dr Who supermag for DS1 last birthday and it was an absolute b**ger to put together. It took my mum a whole day to make a Cyberman (I'd already thrown it across the room in a rage)so god knows how long a Tardis would take .

I think it was supermag anyway - they do a tardis, a cyberman and a K9. May be leading you up the garden path here

My DS (age 7) has some supermag and he loves it mainly because he made an aeroplane a month ago and its still together now!

We also have some magnetix but tbh it hasnt been played with as much as the supermag.

magnetix is a poor imitation of geomag the original and best

Geomag = The Heinz of the tomato sauce world
Magnetix = Waitrose own brand
Supermag = Aldo own brand

Geomag is far better quality than Magnetix. Magnetix is made in some eastern sweatshop and Geomag is made, er, probably by the hands of angels.

Will strike the Tardis off the list. I throught it was probably lesser quality.

There was a safety recall on Magnetix not so long ago (not in the UK for some reason though) because the small magnets could come loose and fall out. I compared the two sorts that we had and you could see the manufacturing quality of Geomag was superior - no way would the magnets come out easily.

The Magnetix is fine really. There is a quality difference but, like everything, you do get what you pay for You can still have a lot of fun with Magnetix. Make sure it never gets put in mouths though.

Generally I would say go for Geomag. The problem is that you don't get a lot for your money though. The boxes all boast how many pieces they have but that's rods and balls together to it doesn't look much when you open the box! It's all box

yes, now just looking at the geomag, alot more expensive. it's the inlaws money though . All contruction toys are mucho expensive though, but he loves lego and likes mecanno and k'nex so it would probably get a good deal of use.

I remember DS1 getting his first box- it said pieces and he could make a cube. (slight exaggeration!)

As I said, Magnetix is fine really.

Given the turn this convo has taken and what I now know about the varying qualities, I would definately say scrap the supermag idea, the stuff ds1 got today is obviously cheap (well it was), although he is very happy with it.

We only have Supermag and the DSs love it. It's also pretty cheap so they've got tons of it.

v quickly sorry no time to read thread but supermag 3.99 for a 25 quid set in poundstretcher at the mo if you've got one locally.
