Alternatives to the Post Office, they keep losing my stuff!

Does anyone know of reasonably priced alternatives to the Post Office for sending parcels, where I can pay per parcel rather than having an account with a courier company? I've just found out that yet another birthday present I sent to a friend's dc didn't turn up and as this is the third time this year this has happened I'm getting a bit fed up and am also wondering how many of my Christmas parcels they'll manage to lose! Anyone have any recommendations?

Well I wouldn't go with TNT - they seem to have lost some CD's......

My dh has had 2 xmas gifts "lost" by the Post Office. Funny how they never lose the crappy stuff.
How about Federal Express ground.
UPS is good here in the usa...I don't know if they are a viable alternative in the uk.

Thanks Sofia, will look into FedEx and UPS.

Webchick - thanks, I'll give them a try for the bigger stuff.
Southeastastra - A nice idea, but not very practical.

Best by far would be Parcel2Gowww.parcel2go.com/
