what's the alternative?? we're basically looking for "half-blind" options (not sure if that's the correct term) for our bottom sash windows, can't find them anywhere though. Don't want to get full blinds either. Does anyone have any ideas out there? TIA

Voile or muslin?

Or 'frost' the bottom windown pane?

jane313 · 07/11/2004 09:56

theres been a few thread on that stuff you can use to make the windows opaque but still let the light in.

jane313 · 07/11/2004 09:58

here it is

the brume website looked good

ZolaPola · 07/11/2004 10:05

thanks for that - we're probably going to go more the voile/blind route though. If anyone has any recommended links would appreciate them. Thanks!

plain white voile .. stretched across the bottom pane (no gathers)

blinds will have to be either up or down so you'll probably leave them down and lose the light

shutters ... but very very expensive

blossomhill · 07/11/2004 10:20

I'd go with Twiglett and say a piece of voile. I think that would look lovely.

ZolaPola · 07/11/2004 10:23

Being really stupid here (not a v practical person) but how exactly do you hang it?! can it roll up or are you stuck with it down all the time? can you buy readymade with necessary fittings etc?

A voile would be down all the time. You would hang it with a piece of net wire on 2 hooks.

ZolaPola · 07/11/2004 10:35

thank you
(you'll have to keep this going now..)

John Lewis do a very plain voile .. just measure your windows .. and pick some up then all you need to do is hem it ..leaving the top (and possibly the bottom if you want to) open at each sides so you can pass the curtain wire through it .. then tack a little hook each side of window pain .. and bob's your uncle

or you could get your mum to do it .. which was my route

Gobbledigook · 07/11/2004 11:17

AHEM BH - I said voile first!!

SULK!

Twiglett · 07/11/2004 11:18

of course my mum refused to believe that I didn't want gathers (people will see through darling .. no they won't mum .. it will look cheap darling .. no it won't mine)

.. so mine are big enough for gathers and have to be stretched across so there's lots of material down either side (looks ok TBH)
