christmas presents for one year old - what do you think?

It will be DS's first christmas (he is nearly one) and we are thinking what to get him that a)he will like (could be a bit hit and miss as he only likes spoons just now ), b) won't cost an absolute fortune and c)won't just be a pile of plastic to break. We want to get him nice stuff (obviously) but don't want to go mad and overwhelm him with gifts as he'll likely get half of Mothercare/John Lewis from grandparents....
So, our ideas so far are:
wheelybug
wooden toddle truck
caterpillar alphabet thing
Anyone got these (and if so are they good)or have good ideas for me??

We got ds1 a toddle truck for his first birthday which he used non-stop for about 18 months I think. The elc one wasn't that sturdy though (although it looks better now). It got left in the rain so we're buying one for ds2 for his 1st birthday too! Plus a wheelybug for Christmas cos I've always thought they looked good but other people on here have raved about them. the caterpillar thing - tbh, I bought some finger puppets and by the time they're old enough to keep them on they're not interested!

The mumsnet guide to toys is absolutely great btw, if I've bought something via that it's been fab. And a toddle truck is recommended, I believe.

my 14 month old will be getting a

smart trike

boy baby doll (he carries his big sisters one about with him)

the blue my first stroller (he walks well by himslef)

Iggle Piggle and Upsy Daisy

we have aso got him a couple of books - in the night garden and usborne touchy feely ones.

SoMuchToBits · 25/11/2007 19:53

We got ds a toddle truck at about that age - very good, he still uses it now (he's nearly 7) to transport heavy items from room to room.

amazonianwoman · 25/11/2007 20:01

Wooden toddle truck definitely - DS 8.5mths loves playing with DD's old one.

I've bought the ELC whizz around garage for DS - £37.50 reduced to £25. He loved playing with it in the shop a couple of weeks ago

andyrobo237 · 25/11/2007 21:33

Well our DS wjo will be 10 months is getting an IOU for a new car seat! He has enough clothes to last a year, enough toys that were his sisters, and doesnt play with them all and we dont have room for big toys! I am sure he wont even notice!

accessorizewithbabysick · 25/11/2007 21:36

I think you're right andyroby, I have 2 boys so by rights I shouldn't get anything for ds2, I swore I wouldn't! Different for chocbutton of course, although it's often more special to get the best pressie for birthday rather than christmas.

CantSleepWontSleep · 25/11/2007 22:04

DD was nearly one last Christmas, and the present that she got the most use out of this year was this. You can fold it down too when not in use.

She'll be getting a Wheelybug this Christmas, when she's nearly two, so it'll be the bigger one which should then last years according to threads on here about it.

accessorizewithbabysick · 25/11/2007 22:46

CSWS, my ds loves that thing at nursery, they can't get him out of it! And yes, buying wheelybug at 2 is far more sensible, I shall probably be badgered into buying the bigger one for ds1 (who's turning 4) anyway!

RainingCatsandDogs · 25/11/2007 22:56

Ds 16 months loves his wheelybug and toddle truck - two favourite things.
I got the alphabet caterpillar for my dd when she was young but she never really played with it - gave it away!.
Have you looked at the 3 for 2 Boots stuff as they have ELC things also and a well priced own brand range for this age. We are getting ds this.
this is well used also.

My ds just likes to be on the go all day!

Shitemum · 25/11/2007 23:07

The present that DD2 liked best on her first birthday, and still has loads of fun with every day, was a small spinning top like this

duck spinning top

she can just about work it herself too.

chocbutton · 26/11/2007 19:18

thanks for these everyone, will def add trike to our list now as was already considering one. Might scrap the caterpillar too, and spend the money on something else!
Def going for wheelybug (the bumblebee one) and toddle truck - will also check out boots 3 for 2 sale.
thanks again, feel free to add more xmassy ideas.....

We got the bee wheelybug for DDs first birthday. It's definitely the toy she uses most - loves it

Been xmas shopping today and bought loads, couldn't help myself

spinning top
dance CD (for us both to get funky to!)
pull-along duck that quacks
bouncy ball with a glittery snowscene inside
duplo
picnic hamper with teaset
books

I wanted the trike from Argos linked above, but it was out of stock in the whole of the NorthWest

Bee wheely bug £39.99

accessorizewithbabysick · 26/11/2007 23:08

I just got a cow one from ebay for £44 inc postage chocbutton, think they were doing bees as well. cant wait for it to arrive!
We're also getting ds2 a wooden drum, I think they like musical instruments and get good value as they get older.
