Skoda Ocatvia - 1.0 or 1.6

So, we have narrowed our search down to a Skoda Octavia. We're thinking of getting a new 1.0 - we live in the suburbs and don't do much motorway driving - mostly once or twice a year when driving to a cottage which would be about 100/150 miles away. We're keen to get a petrol car and the 1.0 is a mild hybrid ( I believe that's the term). I've read that the 1.0 will struggle on the motorway with a lot of driving. Just wondered what people's experiences were of driving a Skoda 1.0 on the motorway? Is it really worth considering the 1.6? Thanks.

For 4 journeys a year with no towing the 1.0 will be fine. The 1.6 will drive better but really not worth it for so few journeys.

Thanks very much Who.

The 1.0 will be very slow and probably quite frustrating to drive. They don’t make a 1.6 so I assume you’re referring to the 1.5 which will be much better to drive. Personally, I wouldn’t buy any VAG product but at least Skoda seem to be the most reliable brand in the group.

They do make a 1.6 so not sure where you got that info from?

From experience of bigger cars with small engines I'd go for the 1.6 personally. We had to replace our 1.6 mazda last year and the weight ratio was crazy, it definitely needed a bigger engine! We've now got a skoda octavia estate. We went for the 2.0 diesel as we do more driving.

Can you test drive both options to see which would work better for you?

Erm, Skoda themselves!

That's hilarious in that case then!

My brother in law had one a few years back so we were well informed that the engine needed to be bigger, plus there are loads of second hand ones on auto trader for sale! 🤣

They used to make a 1.6 but the OP was referring to new cars so that would be a 1.5.

I have a 2000 1.5L which is fine but not as quick out of junctions etc as my older 1.8L was, and you can really feel the difference with a bootful of heavy stuff. I really wouldn't like to have to drive a 1L and didn't even consider it when I was changing my car.

Thanks everyone. Yes, wingingit - good idea. We'll need to try and test drive both.

When you are up to speed the 1.0 will be reasonable on motorways. However if your journey involves a lot of hills and windy roads get the bigger engine. The 1.0 will become tiresome.
