I need something big enough for 2 teenagers and 2 adults (occasionally 3 teenagers).

Economic - preferably 1.2 litre.

Big enough boot for weekend trips (but happy to get a roof box for camping trips so doesn’t need to be enormous).

Definitely not diesel. Petrol or hybrid.

I like the look of:

Peugeot 2008
Ford Ecosport
Nissan Qashqai

Anyone got one of these and can comment? Or suggest alternatives?

Don't get a small engine in a big car that is going to carry lots of big people. You will need to rev it more which will stress the engine and it will not achieve the claimed economy anyway. Having more power is also userful for overtaking and joining motorways where there is only a short sliproad.

Get a more powerful engine and learn to drive more economically.

Out of that list I would probably go for the Nissan.

Honda Civic? I love the boot in mine.

Skoda octavia. You won't regret it

Seconded. If you want quality buy Japanese (with the exception of Nissan)

Thanks everyone for the advice. I bought a Skoda Yeti.
