The search for the perfect bunk beds is driving me crazy

I know there have been lots of threads on this lately, including one of my own. I am trying to order some today and getting nowhere.

I need bunk beds that:

  1. can be used as separate beds (only one of the beds will be used for the first couple of years)
  2. have the ladder on the right-hand side when you face it.
  3. have a straight not sloping ladder

Ideally they should also be able to take a mattress of a decent thickness (20cm rather than 15cm)

M&S ones are back in stock, but they won't deliver until late Dec (need before that).
John Lewis tell me that theirs doesn't split into 2 beds, and the ladder is on the wrong side.
Joseph ones look a bitcheap and nasty, and the ladder slopes out too much.
Thuka, Feather and Black are just too pricey (don't really want to spend over £500)
Furniture123 ones only take very thin mattresses.

Where else am I missing? I don't like the Ikea or Argos ones, or the ones at some of the cheap bed superstores (Dreams, Bensons etc).

Does anyone have the JL bunks? Their internet help people say that the one online doesn't split into 2, but the Milton Keynes branch say that it does.

The ladder being on the left is still a problem, but I'm getting desperate!

Whats wrong with Argos ones?
look ok to me I think ds's have them at their Dads.

haychee · 09/11/2007 14:19

Have you tried ebay, for the more expensive makes?

We got dd1 a lovely one in the summer for £90!

Its wooden and solidly built.
You can assemble it with stairs on the right or the left.
The ladder is straight.
It has a double futon underneath (which dd1 prefers to sleep on so weve put a double matress on instead of the flimsy faom futon thing)
And a standard single up the top.
It also has a desk to the side end with a drawer.
It has nice shelves etc too.

Ill find a link hang on.

MrsBadger · 09/11/2007 14:23

et voila
15cm mattress on the top is the only thing wrong with them
also in pine

totaleclipse · 09/11/2007 14:25

something like this?

haychee · 09/11/2007 14:26

this link shows it better

SlightlyMadStuffing · 09/11/2007 14:26

Our is from Dreams.

It has the ladder on the right
It has a straight ladder with flat rungs (thin rungs are painful on the feet)
It is metal
It can be seperated (BUT the top bunk will always have the side rails on even when seperate)
Maximum mattress depth at top is approx 18.5cm (just measured)
It was cheap...less than £150 w/o mattress although it may have been in hte sale.

Boco · 09/11/2007 14:27

I'm getting the argos ones - i think it's good value and will get better mattresses, and I think they look ok.

SlightlyMadStuffing · 09/11/2007 14:27

Sorry - justseen that you don't like dreams..ignore me.

Finally sorted out the bunk bed problem. I've ordered some from Homebase - very cheap and surprisingly solid. Got them without mattresses so that I can buy some decent ones from John Lewis.

Thanks for all the ideas and help.
