Test drive - garage says no!

We've seen a car (2017, 1 owner, full service history) we're interested in. DH called to ask if we could view and take it for a test drive. Garage said yes, can view it by appointment however garage said we can't take it for a test drive because the car's under warranty.

Hmm. So reading between the lines, is he trying to say 'there's no need to test drive it - it's under warranty so if anything goes wrong when you buy it, just bring it back'? Or am I justified in feeling suspicious? He didn't say.. 'sorry, during covid test drives aren't possible...' which I could have understood.

Just walk away. There are thousands of cars out there for sale which will allow you to test drive.

moochingtothepub · 29/03/2021 12:48

They can't allow it until they reopen - 12th April. They can do click and collect now

FelineUK · 29/03/2021 13:01

@moochingtothepub - dealer didn't mention anything about covid and they are open by appointment. He just said, can't test drive it - it's under warranty.

I've just called and spoke to someone else who said he can overrule his colleague and we can test drive it.

No one can test drive any car at the moment, garages are only open for click and collect. He probably meant its under warranty anyway so no need to test drive.

TheVolturi · 29/03/2021 13:13

Re reading your op this is exactly what he said, and it sounds like you're aware of the covid rules so I don't really understand why you're upset?

PopcornPeacock · 29/03/2021 13:13

I test drove mine whilst under warranty last year just before lockdown OP. Walk away

This garage is open by appointment only, and will allow test drives.

They should not be allowing test drives. If they are, they are breaking the law.

TheVolturi · 29/03/2021 13:22

It must have changed recently, just googled and they are allowed now apparently so I stand corrected.

You can test drive cars! We did yesterday

N51BU · 30/03/2021 07:55

Nobody should ever buy a car without a test drive. Imagine if it had for example a faulty part that isn't covered under the warranty

SquigglePigs · 30/03/2021 08:01

Good you've got someone to agree to a test drive. I'd never buy a car without driving it first.

You really shouldn't have. I bought mine on line so had protection. I didn't test drive but if it had been dodgy I could have returned it.
Walesrecommendations · 30/03/2021 08:09

I was told no test drives too, but as purchased by click and collect I had 14 days to return it and signed a little contract to that effect.
