Advice needed about a Gameboy or similar?

My DS1 is nearly six and when on holiday he got friendly with two boys who were a bit older than him and had Gameboys, now surprise, surprise he wants one.

Has anyone got any advice about which one to buy, I can't find the one that the boys had on holiday, it was flat with the controls at either side of the screen and you could link the two Gameboys up. The only one I can find is one where the screen flips up, Gameboy Colour I think. Any advice/recommendations would be appreciated.

You need a Gameboy Advance as they are the ones with the controls either side of the screen. Lots of places sell them, Woollies and HMV do some good deals and TRUS also do "packages" but check the suitability of the games first - their packs aren't always what you want

The cheapest offer I have found is in Blockbuster video 64.99 with one selected game up to £20 and 10x £1off rental vouchers. Thats what we are getting dd1, nearly 7 for Xmas.

Gameboy Advance SP is the latest model (it has the flip up screen which protects it a bit). You can link them up. I think these are the ones that Blockbuster is offering - seemed a good deal to me.

The one you saw on holiday is a Gameboy Advance. The "flip-up" ones are Gameboy Advance SP, which is the latest model. Tbh, the difference in price is not enormous these days and the SP is so much better for the child's eyes as it is backlit (like a computer screen), whereas the Advance needs an external source of light. What happens normally is that the child continues to play even when the light source is inadequate, which can lead to eye strain.

Hate to say it too but the advance is very rare to find for sale now that the SP has taken over,it is s better set up for their eyes and much easier to see than the GB advance. The SP is selling at £69.99 and argos have quite good deals atm.

Brilliant, thank you everyone. I was going to search out the very same one as DS1 had seen on holiday but glad I didn't now the new one's worth it to protect his eyes. Will check out the deal in Blockbuster.

Thanks again!
