I've got an old model 3100 compact - the difference is partly the size of bowl. The one I have is fine for a family of four, but if you entertain a lot and need to cook for 8, you might want a larger model.

If DH is paying, then yes, of course you do

I have the 5200 and I love it. It's bigger and stronger than the other models...and comes with a juicer. I think it's worth it.

morningglory what about whipping cream and eggs? which didn't give magimix a very good rating for those.

Musst say I haven't tried to use the Magimix for whipping cream and egg...I use a mixer for those things. If you chose the Kenwood just for those, you might regret it.

I chose the magimix because it is so strong and reliable, something I'm not sure about the Kenwood. Magimix is the domestic arm of a company (forgot the name)which produces Kitchen equipment for professional kitchens, and it's expetise is food processors. If you also want to whip, just buy a cheapo mixer, and you'll probably get better results than a food processor.
