We think we want to get ds (nearly 9) a telescope for xmas. Dh and I will want to use it too although it will be in his room.

I dont want to spend more than £100.

I know nothing about telescopes as well.

Any advice?

A while ago, DW got rid of her huge great refracting telescope which you couldn't use without clearing a space the size of a car and bought a Meade ETX which she raves about. Hers is a "90" I think and cost several hundreds, but there is a less powerful one here on eBay which might fit the bill. HTH

We have a Meade ETX too, I think it's the one after the 90. It's really SO much better than cheaper ones (sorry to sound hideous). The way you can just set the program so it finds Jupiter or whatever and tracks it while you watch makes a huge difference, much less frustrating for a child. You can see Jupiter's moons clearly, and Saturn's rings. Sherwoods are fab, very good to deal with, have lots of special offers, and have some excellent pages on just learning about telescopes. We bought ours from there 2 years ago and it was about £300 including a load of extras like a case and the programmable handset.

Have fun!

Ooh no sorry, just remembered ours is a 90 too, I knew it was the second from bottom but I had forgotten the 70!

DW was over the moon (sorry) when she saw Jupiter's moons this summer - worth every penny IMHO

It is quite incredible when you see them though, isn't it? We did have a few teething problems when dh programmed the handheld thing and told it we were in Kabul, but things have been better since we admitted to being in the UK

telescopesonsale

DH says the one 420x tasco is quite good for £99.90 but if you can stretch to £159.99 then get the 675x reflector one as it is sig. better for extra £60

the sale ends tomorrow tuesday 2nd nov.

KangaMummy · 01/11/2004 10:32

the cheaper ones are a waste of money as are not much better than binoculars

good luck

KangaMummy · 01/11/2004 16:57

bumping for hercules as offer runs out on 2nd
