I think it depends on your skin type -I have lots of silver chains & none of them make my neck green - I have a darkish complexion & rather oily skin.

Sterling silver shouldn't, you can coat the back with clear nail varnish if it does.

I am fair skinned and blonde and I have to wear silver as I am allergic to gold. Silver won't turn your skin green. Cheap nickel plated silver may do after a while as the silver coating gets worn of and you get green skin from the copper underneath.

So why do I get grubby marks (black not green) off silver and white gold rings? Is it cos they're cheap?

It could be some chemicals you may be dealing with, I do know that photocopier toner even in vapour form (as you change the cartridge) can cause a chemical reaction with certain metals. maybe its something like that, or I find that bleach can discolour silver, it just needs a clean with silver dip, to bring it back up.
