How do I change the Amazon account linked to my Kindle?

My Kindle voyage was a present from my partner a few years ago. He set it up on his Amazon account (which has Prime) and it’s linked to our joint account. Sadly we’re about to separate and I’m in the process of detangling our finances and the rest. I will probably post a hundred questions about divorce but what I’d like to know now is, is it possible to link my Kindle to my newly set up Amazon account without losing the content? And if it is, how do you do it? Thank you

It's pretty easy to deregister the device from one account and set it up with another account (there is an option in the settings menu) but I'm not sure that you can keep the content from the previous account. Would it be worth downloading everything you want onto the old device and then buy a new kindle for your new account? That would be an expensive solution though!

Yes, Nanny, that’s what I was worried about, losing the content. Buying another device is unfortunately not an option as finances are tight. So basically, is the content on a Kindle linked to the Amazon account exclusively?
