need help choosing an ipod
kid · 26/10/2004 08:40
DH has said in the past that he would like an ipod, so I thought I'd buy him one for chtistmas. The thing is, I haven't got a clue! So, does anyone know of a website where I can compare what they do and the prices. Or has anyone got one they can recommend?
jenkel · 26/10/2004 09:03
From what I can remember from last year, there are only 3 you can buy, each one has a different storage capacity. So just depends on the amount of songs that your dh wants to store.
nasa · 26/10/2004 09:08
jenkel is right - in fact there are only 2 20GB and 40GB. THink the 20GB comes in lots of colours. DP has got the 40 GB one; he lovesit
ScummyMummy · 26/10/2004 09:21
I have a green ipod mini, kid, and it is super, super cool! It fits 1000+ songs on which means I can fit almost all of my fave music on it but it's not so huge that I can't keep track and tinker endlessly with perfecting the playlists. The original ipod fits about 10,000 songs on so would be the one if your dh is a John Peel-like extensive music collector. Have a look here and here for more info. Good luck- it's a brilliant present and he's a lucky man!
BearintheBigBlueHouse · 26/10/2004 09:28
the minis are the coloured ones - not really for blokes IMHO - we have a 20gig regular iPod with 4000 tracks loaded (almost 12 days if played end to end) and room for 1000 more - can't see why you'd need double that with the 40gig model, but size is, after all, everything.
search archived messages as there have been poddy discussions in the past - about best gadgets to go with them (iTrip radio transmitter) and how long it takes to load your CD collection.
the mini is £180-odd, the 20 GB £220 and the 40 GB £300 and Apple like Sony make it difficult for you to get real discounts from these prices. If you're resigned to paying full price, John Lewis is a good place to go as their after sales service is generally tip-top.
oh, and they're likely to be in shorter and shorter supply as Christmas approaches

thanks for that, at least I have a starting point now! DH already has a MD player which I got him last year, he uses it every single day to and from work, do you think the ipods are the same thing or are they a lot better? As you can see, I haven't got a clue
welshmum · 26/10/2004 11:09
ipods are better. You need discs for the minidics player and that means you lose sound quality. With the ipod you download directly from your computer onto it so you save time and gain quality. They're lighter too and less likely to skip if jolted.
Bought one for my DH 2 years ago - he loves it - never leaves the damn thing alone - makes him very happy.
jenkel · 26/10/2004 11:19
Somebody else has also mentioned this, but if you want it for christmas get it soon. In the past years these have been very difficult to get hold of.
kid · 26/10/2004 11:22
I was hoping to get a bargain on one! Doesn't look like its possible though! I'd better get a move on if I want to order one. I'm a bit worried about spending nearly £200 if he has since changed his mind! DH is very into music though, so I think it will be a good present, I could always sell his Net MD player!
august24 · 26/10/2004 12:09
if you know anyone going to the USA then have them buy you one as they are so much cheaper there. If it is 220 pounds here then they are about 220 dollars and that is almost 1/2 the price with the exchange rate.
Gingerbear · 26/10/2004 12:11
Do you need Windows 200/XP on your PC? How do you download tunes?
They look fab, but my PC is a dinosaur (windows 98)
BearintheBigBlueHouse · 26/10/2004 12:22
You do need XP or 2000 on a PC
Kid, if he uses the MD a lot, I bet he'll use this more - everything in one place, no fiddly discs...
if you are getting one from the States watch out for customs as they are really cracking down on people bringing stuff like iPods in
kid · 26/10/2004 12:27
my friend used to live in NewYork so she has friend there, I wonder if I could get one posted (as a gift!) to avoid customs. do you know an american website I can look at for one?
august24 · 26/10/2004 13:38
you need to do some research to see if the site takes foriegn credit cards, but mac.com is as good a place as any to buy them, right now they have free shipping and you can have them personalized for free. Also just check out the shipping cost(what it would cost your friend to ship it to you), because that can be pricey and may end up costing you the same as buying it here.
SofiaAmes · 27/10/2004 01:14
shipping can be trouble. They stop lots of stuff (since you have to declare what is in international packages on the front) and send you a bill for customs (plus handling fees) before you can have it.
We are going to the usa at the end of november and my dh is coming back on the 28th of november. I'd be happy to send an ipod back with him, if you want to order one and have it sent to my aunt's in california (where we are staying). Don't forget that some usa sites will add sales tax too...so you have to add that into the total cost. CAT me if you want me to help.
kid · 27/10/2004 07:28
thats really kind of you SofiaAmes. I still haven't managed to find a deal on an american site, the ipods I have come across so far in the USA are the same price as here! But I'll keep looking and let you know ASAP.
