PS2 as DVD player

Our DVD player is bust - they don't seem to last that long with us (its our second in a couple of yearS). Admittedly we tend to buy cheap ones - this last one is made by Daewoo.

Was wondering about getting a PS2 and using that as a DVD player? Any thoughts from those who own one?

works absolutely fine as a dvd player - go for it

Do they last? Or will it need replaced every year or so?

Was going to wait until next version (PS3 or whatever) appeared as Ds1 is 3.5, but do use the DVDs...

well we use ours mainly for games but have used it as a dvd player - however I am sure I saw a dvd player for £29.99 in comet or woollies or similar - may be a cheaper option. Also woollies do a dvd player with about 50 dvds for £50

As we've gone through 2 cheap dvd players in a year or so, I'm loathe to buy another cheap one, but thanks for the suggestion. Looking to pay more for something more reliable.

W have had our playstation for 2 years and the boys play games and dvds on it regularly.

Can't remember where it was, Comet or Dixons (dixons I think) they were doing a Pioneer (sp?) for £59.99 bargain I thought

PS2 should be ok for DVD's. However you may find that the volume doesn't play as loundly as DVD- my dh partially deaf and could never hear DVD properly. Also the don't play multi region dvd's. Boots have an offer \at the minute- if you spend £30 (Christmas is coming-loads of 3 for 2's) then you can buy a Panasonic DVD player worth £88 for £40.

but they do play hooky ones err....apparently

x box plays dvd's as well

As Lou33 says there's also the XBox which has a hard drive all of its own. This is what DH says about the xbox
It is also better than the PS2 in that:
it has a faster processor
it has better graphics
It has Xbox live so you can play games online
It has a hard drive so you don't need a memory card
It's generally a more powerful machine.
All this is according to dh- not my personal opinion as I know very little about these games

we don't have a DVD player, just use PS2 & the sound isn't great, you really have to turn up the volume, it also doesn't like recorded DVDs & they only play black & white...
I suppose we might have to get a 'real' player if they're that cheap...

X box plays dvds brilliantly
