Does anyone know how to network two computers?

I need the simpple person guide how to do this, as I am not very good at these things My computer has a network card built into it so I don't need to buy anything for this one, but the other computer is older and doesn't have a network card, I have brought the Ethnet led that I need, but the other computer doesn't have a ethnet slot. I am guessing I need to buy a network card, and slot it into older computer but have no idea how you do that!! If anyone can help, I would be very grateful! Thanks

You're right, you do need to buy an ethernet network card (they are not expensive) and install it into the older computer. It's not that difficult to do, but would probably be worth finding a local geek to do it for you if possible.

You need a network card, the computer case will then need to be opened and the card fitted into the appropriate expansion slot inside. (be sure the card is compatible with the operating system the machine is running.)
If you ae running 98 or anything later the machine should recognise the network card and install it for you. Then its a case of cabling the two machines together....

what operating system are the two machines on?

they are both on windows XP (it was my brothers old computer and he upgraded it)I went and brought a network card. Dh has slotted the network card in and connected it, so its straight forward from here right??

Okay on the desktop there should be a My Netowrk Places (or something like that..) icon - open that and there is an icon labelled something like 'computers near me' open that and see if the two machines appear inside it...
Sorry this is a bit vegue but I'm in front of an RM machine so it's been knackered and half the functionality removed...
