Im just wondering, my LO doesn't really play with toys and I am wondering what I can give her to play with or what toys would be good for her age. She has loads of toys!

My DS is 16 months and loves things he should not have (mobile phones, remote controls, wallets) and doing things he should not be doing (currently climbing and chasing the cats).

Real toys that I try and encourage are -

bricks for building, banging together, knocking down - I demonstrate and cheer!

wheeled toys for pushing along, making appropriate noises for - again I demonstrate with enthusiasm!

books with flap, touchy feely things, etc

He also loves cardboard tubes, saucepans, magazines, boxes to empty and fill, things to post through the stair gates and cat flap, musical toys,

Does she have a toy house or farm ? My dds both got the fisher price Little People toys on their first birthdays, one had the house and the other the farm - they came at just the right time for them deveopmentally, as they started to move the figures around, make noises etc. They also loved their rocking horse at that age, and toy kitchen with all the accessories!

My ds is 11 months and his favourite things are:

Wheely truck with bricks in - he can't walk yet but can with this.

An old biscuit tin which he bashes like a drum.

A toy mobile phone with buttons - also likes an old calculator that doesn't work any more.

Sheets of newspaper to screw and tear up.

Bricks for bashing together

Things that rattle.

i find he gets bored with toys if they are around all the time - I try and rotate them so he only has a few on the go at any one time, then when old ones come out again he looks on them with new interest!!

OH yes I forgot. My lo loves balls for kicking, throwing, carrying around and posting. He also loves things to push around.

For his 1st birthday he had a fantastic giraffe thing from fisherprice which you they can stand up holding onto and post balls into the mouth. It makes sounds and plays a tune and my lo still loves it after 4 months. He also had a push along car that he either pushes whilst walking or sits on. He hasn't quite got the idea of pushing with his feet but is nearly there. He also likes to climb on this! Again he is not bored of this after 4 months.

I am trying to get him interested in simple inset puzzles but he likes pulling out the pieces and that is it.

I take him to different baby and toddler groups and we go round other peoples houses. It is interesting to see what he likes there.

Oh yes he also got a pop up tunnel and tent set which he loves and his friend got a paddling pool filled with soft play balls. They definately keep him active.

My dd loved scibbling with paper and crayons at 1 year. I discovered this by chance as I thought she would be too young. She also got little people ark and garage which she really liked.

dd likes cars. and dinosaurs! she does the noises and chases people round pretending the dinosaur is going to eat them!

DD loves a beginners box of Duplo lego her gran gave her. She is also into simple puzzles. She can't do them but likes to take the pieces out. She loves her a plastic ball that she throws at me with glee and then tried to catch. Fianlly she likes pushing toy cars around the room.

Other than those she prefers the joy of emptying cupboards and bookshelves.

At home, DD (15 months) just likes books (to the point of obsession) and cuddling soft toys. Am completely failing to interest her in anything else, apart from the contents of my handbag.

Oh - she does like playing with a shoebox of her old socks. That really is about it though!

puppydavies · 19/10/2007 20:28

dd1 liked putting in and taking out kind of toys at that age. and stacking cups.
