I'm thinking about treating myself to a carpet washer type thing (what are they actually called? ) and would love to hear about any anyone have and what they are like-any good etc and how much they cost.

dont get a steamer, i spent £100 and they dont get the deep muck out. Personally I would hire a carpet cleaner. Less maintainence, no storage issues etc I hire rug doctor (homebase) every 4-6 months and it works a treat. It has an agitating brush unlike a lot which are just the spray on, suck off type. They are more heavy duty than the vax which are a bit too "domestic" to cope with real toddler muck. I spend about £25 all in - shampoo etc. The R doctor is easier on the back too!

I have a vax which was about £140. Worth the money as i regularly clean all the carpets. It does work better on my lounge carpet which is wool rather than the cheaper carpets upstairs. I have a black dog and two dc's and cream carpets and they all look fine after being down since 2003.

I have this one but bought it about 2 yrs ago so i'm sure its much cheaper now (if its still around that is). I've found it really good and easy to use.

DH bought a bissell - he reckons it cleans the carpet well.

the only thing i was considering was being able to share it with my mum an sister as we are all getting puppies over the next 6 months!

does the £25 include the hire price?
