Can anyone advise me as to which brand / style of bike to buy off ebay? I am a cycling novice and need some tips please.

I am 5'10'' tall. I'd like it to do family bike rides, and to ride on road/paths, but not so much off road.

I have NO IDEA what brand to get or what to look for. It doesn't need to be posh and I don't have a lot to spend - just something basic and sturdy. It needs to be able to take a child seat and/or pull a trailor.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Mught be able to help. How much dosh have you actually got?

You probably are after a hybrid. And at your height can get away with a gent's cycle (I am a short ass so need a ladies or kids bike)

Any links to things you have in mind?

Try freecycle.

Or do you have anything like this www.thebikestation.org.uk/ near you?

Don't buy it off ebay. Go to a bike shop and get a good second hand one, after test riding it.

Ah goodpoint from Frogs re: ebay if you don't know what you are after.

I did post on freecycle, but no luck yet. We bought some bikes of some friends (don't get me started) which turned out to need £150 of repairs between them. So less than that, for me and DH, and no repairs. Sorry, thats confusing. Less than £70, the lower the better. I am seeing them go for £30 - £50 on ebay.

Do you live near a Decathlon store? They're really helpful, have great service department, and you can get a new bike for £69 Comes in women's style too

Astrophe · 14/10/2007 21:06

Thanks everyone. We ate NT members, so will definately check out clumber park. There is a decathlon at nottingham too I think, so perhaps I will check them out. Are there any brands I should avoid / look out for?
