Digital video camera - recommendations?

Hi - we want to buy one of these - tape free. Anyone got one they think is great? Ideally would like good image stability for the shakier camera operator, good indoors and low light, and reasonable battery length.

When do you want it for? We have one but I am not sure if it is tape free and when it is available as hubby is using it to transfer from an old one which broke. (If that makes any sense at all.)
