SUV Hybrids?

We're looking to buy a SUV hybrid car. We're unable to get out and look at/test drive many at the moment, so wondered if anyone has any recommendations or experience?

Our budget is around 30k but flexible.

I have a Lexus NX and previously had an RX. It’s fine - comfy, handles well. It’s a bit boring to drive

MrsKingfisher · 23/09/2020 20:09

Dh has a Lexus NX and loves it gets about 38 miles to the gallon I have the UX and I get around 47. Really nice to drive, smooth and quiet, barely feel any bumps on the road The Audi Q5 is now available as a hybrid, don't know what that's like though. Only thing I will say about Lexus is their infotainment system is bilge.

We have a CRV hybrid. Its a nice drive, and I love the speed pulling away

Dawnlassie · 25/09/2020 14:37

If its a toss up between Lexus and Audi get the Lexus every time.

I’m looking to get a plug in hybrid SUV next. It’s probably be a second-hand one for under 30k but you could find a Merc, BMW or Volvo. There’s also a Discovery Sport in a plug in version but I think it might be quite a recent release so not sure if there are any second-hand ones available.
I’ve test driven a few but I’m now considering a Cayenne - more pricey but has more umph to it rather than feeling like a mummy mobile.

The plug-ins are great if you do local driving as you can do 30 or more miles on electric alone.

Thank you all, really helpful information 😃

We're thinking maybe a Volvo XC40 ...although might be a bit small? (We're a family of 4, 2 adults 2 dc), but I'm definitely going to look into the Lexus hybrids mentioned.

I would think the XC40 might be a little on the small side. XC60 is a really good size and if you get a good spec, it’ll feel a lot more premium than a Lexus (in my opinion).

Thank you! Really need to get out and have a look and test drive (local lockdown situation here so really struggling!) Advice greatly appreciated.

I have an XC40 and it's fabulous! Family of 4 here, tons of space and great spec. Love it. Boiled down to this, BMW, Evoke and Q5

Good to know, thank you! Hadn't considered the Evoke, will most definitely be looking into this!

The only thing an Evoque is good for is breakdowns.

Land Rover cars are simply unreliable, overpriced tat.

GreenTiles22 · 26/09/2020 15:38

Sorry meant Evoque obvs.

I agree the Evoque and Land Rover sport weren't great, that's why we didn't go for either in the end. The reviews on YouTube are really useful. The BMW X1 and X3 are recommended. I've had both from new and really like them. The BMW controls and central console is the best in my opinion.

sufur · 26/09/2020 16:11

After a bit of online research I think I'm dismissing the Evoque, especially after what you've (@FartingInTheFence and @GreenTiles22) both said.

We also own a BMW 1 series, which I love - totally agree with you @GreenTiles22 about BMWs. The XC40 and X1 are very comparable. Need to try and test drive both. Thank you!

The only two I would consider, not just because of price, but reliability and the shed-load of equipment as standard:

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
Honda CR-V Hybrid

Percyprod · 03/01/2021 14:47

Slightly off topic, but I hate the term "SUV", ridiculous Americanism. Also Landrovers get a lot of stick, but we're on our 4th Discovery, from series 1 to our present series 4. Each one got better, but for towing caravan or horse trailer nothing apart from pick ups seem to have a low range box. Our present one has done 85,000 trouble free, comfortable miles.
