Would you buy an MG?

Just that really... I know they've relaunched recently and you can get a new car for pretty good value, but I don't want the value to tank after a few years?

Any advice or experience please?

Good heavens NO. 😂

Values? LOL

They are worthless now, hence their pricing being low - not to mention the shoddy and crap build quality and useless reliability.

I'd much rather invest in a bus pass than any Chinese-MG.

nachthexe · 20/08/2020 04:53

Oh I thought you meant a classic.
Yes classic.
No otherwise.

Fosler · 20/08/2020 04:57

I bought a classic. 😀👍🏻. Brilliant. Would buy another if I could afford to. Life's for living. Do what makes you happy.

Elai1978 · 20/08/2020 05:14

I’d rather catch AIDS

BikeRunSki · 20/08/2020 05:21

OP, do you mean a classic MG sports car, or the rebranded cheap Chinese cars?

cookingandlooking · 20/08/2020 10:12

Christ, that answers that then 🤣

That, is quote of the year! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Giggorata · 20/08/2020 12:42

I used to have an MG Midget years ago. Loved it, when I was agile enough to insert myself into the cocoon-like space, and didn't have to carry anything larger than a handbag.
I haven't looked at these modern versions yet. Hope they're not as disappointing as the redone Beetles.

Elai1978 · 20/08/2020 15:56

I will say that classic and pre-war MGs can be glorious of course and ownership should be positively encouraged! Sticking an MG badge on some generic Chinese tat is bordering on criminal.

merryhouse · 20/08/2020 15:58

don't be ridiculous
BikeRunSki · 20/08/2020 23:58

@Giggorata, they havn’t redone the classic MGs. A Chinese car firm has bought the brand, and had stick an MG on cheap modern cars.

Would you buy an MG?
Elai1978 · 21/08/2020 05:58

don't be ridiculous

It’s tongue in cheek, but does emphasise how incredibly poor these things are and the level of shame you should you feel if you actually find yourself inside one out on the open road.

This is not "tongue in cheek" and it is certainly not on my shortlist for Quote of the Year. For anyone who has contracted AIDS through little or no fault of their own - from a blood transfusion or needlestick injury, perhaps, or from a cheating partner in what they believed was a monogamous relationship - it is colossally insensitive at the very best, and actually deeply offensive otherwise. But then, it comes as little surprise that Elai1978 and FartingInTheFence (whose writing styles are almost identical and who seem to compliment each other a lot) would be offensive, given their posting history.

To answer the OP, current MG cars are quite rightly denigrated as being not very good. They appeal, I suspect, to two types of people: the ones who bought Ladas and Skodas during the Seventies and Eighties because it was the cheapest way to get a brand new car, with all other considerations being secondary; and those who think they are buying a "British" car, again with all other considerations being secondary.

If you must have a brand new car and really don't care about the underlying engineering, quality, or image, you have a dealer nearby, and you get a good deal, then there might be some merit in an MG. For almost everyone else, a Dacia will be a far better bet.

AgeLikeWine · 27/08/2020 00:23

If you mean the modern Chinese ones, absolutely not. They have a very poor reputation for everything except price.

A used Skoda would be a much, much better option.

Elai1978 · 27/08/2020 14:26

A used Skoda would be a much, much better option.

Well, it’d be a better option certainly but still a VAG shitter. A much, much better option would be something made by Honda, Toyota, Kia or Hyundai

cookingandlooking · 27/08/2020 14:28

Thanks all! I think you've all persuaded me into looking at other options!

DD had an MG sports in the 90s. She loved it, but it cost her a small fortune in repairs, insurance and cabs when it was laid up. Bloody uncomfortable to drive in, she had a hard top for winter, which had to be stored somewhere, not easy with no garage , and was a nightmare to fix on. The only good thing was that when she sold it she got the money back on the hard top that she had paid for it. Sadly not the same for the car. But like I say she had wanted one for ages and loved it. Also useless for going away except for overnight as no room for luggage.

Elai1978 · 27/08/2020 14:53

Assuming you mean an MGF it has nothing to do with the MGs of today as this is simply a name bought by a Chinese company.

viques · 27/08/2020 18:44

Well that's me told.
