Freeview - do you need a TV aerial too?

I'm looking at getting a new TV but our aerial on the roof is broken and although we've had it replaced once the pigeons who like to hang out on it annoyingly keep somehow knocking bits off so it's a bit of a goner.

So, my question - if you have Freeview do you need to use the aerial too?

Yes, you need a digital aerial.

What's a digital aerial - does it go through the 'traditional' aerial on the roof? Or would I need to replace my aerial?

Sorry to be dumb!

You need an aerial on the roof, preferably a digital one - you can technically use a normal one but it depends how strong the signal is where you are. See: this page

we had to replace ours. Has yours got a v hape bit on the end?

You don't need a 'digital' ariel. Just a normal ariel. Try getting one set up in your loft if the pigeons keep attacking it. Mine is there and doesn't get affected by the wind either.

The digital transmissions can get picked up by a normal TV ariel in most areas. It is the digibox that then sorts the broadcast out and and sends it to your tv through a SCART lead.

Sorry - didnt read that right. If you have to get a new ariel - get one that is made for digital transmissions.

I just meant that you dont have to get a new one to recieve the signals ok depending on your area. Most major cities and populated areas will be fine for this.

Thanks guys. I think it will probably just work out cheaper to give up on the old aerial and get Sky multiroom rather than faffing with a new aerial etc.....as we already have SKy+ downstairs (the freeview would have been for upstairs)
