Bedside cots - do these attach to your bed?

Decided I want one for second baby (now pregnant) and doing a bit of research.

I might be being a bit daft - but do bedside cots actually attach to your bed, and if not, what is to stop a gap occurring between the bed and the cot and the baby falling through?

We have a really high divan and I can't see where it would attached to if it needed to?

I am missing something?

My one (from mamans and papas) has an extra thing that goes from the cot and sits over your mattress. Like a bridge almost. It is ridged aswell so baby can't roll onto it, but if the did, they would roll across it onto yourbed. They don't usually attact, this is the ony one I found that linked in a way I liked - usually they ar just placed beside the bed.

mine had brakes which could be put on after the cot was positioned. Dd would regularly wriggle over the gap to lie right next to me, she was like a very persistent little worm!

How do you breast feed the baby then - do you lie on the bolster?

yeah, I slid it back abit so it wasn't so high (you will know what I mean if you get it) - the cot is very sturdy and I kinda half lay in... but most the time DS was in with me and the cot was there for safety to stop him rolling off the bed, he would roll into the cot instead.

The BedNest (available on-line) has a kit that attaches it to different types of beds with straps. It also has an extra lip that is supposed to mean there is no gap between the beds. I am thinking of ordering one but would like to hear from anyone who has one already. Thanks!
