My mum died and I want to start using her car

When I transfer it to me she will get a refund on the car tax and I have to pay for new car tax

When am I best doing that so we dont pay for the same month twice

You only get refunded for whole months, as we found out when we sold on the 1st Angry

KatyMac · 11/07/2020 15:12

Yea so can I sell it at midnight on the 30th?

So either way they get 2 months money

You can declare the vehicle SORN now and then renew the tax on the first of the month. If you have the log book you should be able to do it all online. Obviously you cannot drive the vehicle if it's SORN.

Sorn the car now and you’ll (mum) get any full months back. Then tax it when you want to use it. The only way not to pay for a month twice is sorn it one month and tax it the next.

Glittertwins · 11/07/2020 15:43

It's a lot quicker to get refunds online now - it goes in the submission date and not when DVLA get around to processing the post but you will only get a full month's worth. Sell towards the end of the month and submit the request online.
We did ours at the end of Feb this year and got March onwards back (unlike the previous time when it got caught up in Christmas post and the New Year break).

How will you access a refund for someone who has died? Do they send it to the executor?

KatyMac · 11/07/2020 16:20

Can I declare it sorn if I'm not the registered keeper? If I can that is fab

The refund comes to me so I really pay the same month on the same car twice (executor)

I would transfer the ownership on the last day of the month, then tax it under your own name on 1st.

KatyMac · 11/07/2020 18:22

Do I do the transfer of ownership online or on paper

OP posts:
KatyMac · 11/07/2020 18:23

Sorry @WitchDancer and everyone - I keep forgetting to say thank you for helping me - I think my mind is playing games with me atm

OP posts:
WitchDancer · 11/07/2020 18:48

Understandable in the circumstances.

Yes, you can transfer the ownership online - have a look on the log book, it tells you how on there.

KatyMac · 11/07/2020 22:16

So, to confirm
I go online and transfer it from my mum to my husband on 30th
Then on first I do the other bit of the paperwork and buy the tax? Also online?

On the phone they said I had to do it all on the same day by phone! She got me so confused I felt (feel?) a right numpty

Oh shit can I do it before probate? My brother has agreed I get the car

OP posts:
WitchDancer · 12/07/2020 09:17

If it's just you and your brother to take into account I'm sure there will be no problem in doing it before probate.

The other bit I'm not 100% as DH did it. I do know you can do it via the internet and it can be done in 2 steps.

KatyMac · 12/07/2020 15:12

@WitchDancer thanks
