Washing machines

Yawn.

We need a new washing machine.

Considering - a Bosch or John Lewis one, both are around £299 is either better?

Any other suggestions?

Want something that will last for a bit at least and is reliable (prob doesn't exist now!).

Both are likely to be reliable brands. Bosch have a good reputation and John Lewis own ones ought to match the image of the store.
We bought a Siemens from them and have been very happy with it, but our budget was a bit higher, about £450. We do a lot of washing though smurfgirl .
If you can stay awake, compare them for energy consumption and spin speeds. You want a fast momma that doesn't use loads of electricity!

We actually do do loads of washing for a couple beause we both wear a uniform for work and we wash mine separately and I only have one so can wash it 2/3 times a week!

They are both the same, 1200 spin speed and both A+!

The John Lewis one has a digital display and a delayed timer thingy and variable temperature control? Hmm.

No more than £300 though thats a stretch tbh

I'm looking for a new one as well, where the heck do you start? Some of thm have a wash that takes just under 3 hours . Some have a reduced spin for a 40 degree wash and you can't change it - why? I also had to chuckle at some of the features being 'instant opening after it's finished' That's supposed to be a safety aspect but how many times have I had to wait for the 'click' until I can get at my washing.

smurfgirl · 27/09/2007 09:08

Oooh furball you are more complex than me! I just looked at brands tbh.

Look carefully at the Bosch, we love our one HOWEVER it only spins at 1200 on the 90deg wash!!!! For 40deg wash it only spins at 800.

Dont spend extra money for a 1200 spin machine if it only does 1200 on the high temp washes

EmilyDavidson · 27/09/2007 09:14

I would get the one that had the quickest wash time. Dont bother researching it yourself , just ask them in john lewis because they have all that info

EmilyDavidson · 27/09/2007 09:18

oh blimey nell ,800 is a really poor spin for a standard 40degree wash.
thats another thing you need to ask them in john lewis then smurfgirl !

When my sis got her last washing machine she just rang JL up and asked a couple of questions and bought it over the phone without even bothering to look at it , nice and quick and easy

flowerybeanbag · 27/09/2007 09:20

Don't spend extra money for lots of twiddly impressive sounding features which you won't use - you will probably only ever use 1 or 2 programmes. And get a good spin speed as emily says.

Sunshinemummy · 27/09/2007 09:22

I have a Siemens and am also very happy with it and the barrel fits loads of washing in.

Anna8888 · 27/09/2007 09:27

I have a Siemens, it spins at 1200 on a 30 degree wash, I use the 30, 40, 60, 60+ and 90 degree washes plus the wool wash (all hand washing goes in the machine) and it's very economical.

The Siemens ones start at about £400 which is wayyyyyyy over budget.

Hmm I think we will get the JL one, we'll go and have a look on Saturday.

I agree with the idea of getting a machine that takes a large load... we have a Zanussi. its a couple of years old now.. but I'm still really pleased with it...
if your looking on line you can compare them on the currys and comet website to give you some idea of what they all do...

my machine has a 1500 spin....
