Tow Bar on VW Caravelle

Hi,

I need a tow bar fitting to my van to hold our 4 bike bike rack. The guy I’m using has said if I have a fixed one he can’t guarantee the reverse sensors on my van will still work. If he uses a removable bar it’s £110 more. Does anyone have any experience of this at all. Goes without saying I NEED my sensors!!! Happy with the guy I’m using. Just need to know if a can reliably test this somehow Or if it’s something I’m just going to shell the extra money out on. Tia Smile

That's sounds to me that your sensors won't work with either tow bar in place. They may only work when the tow bar is removed. I would think it is even more important to have functioning sensors when you have the tow bar with four bikes on it. I would suggest you speak with a VW dealer to see what they suggest. (Probably not use them though as they could be very expensive!)

We have a Skoda (same family) with a detachable tow bar and rear parking sensors.

When we tow (caravan) and plug in the electric cable to the car it automatically deactivates the rear sensors. But if we leave the tow bar on whilst driving the rear sensors work as normal.

When they fitted the tow bar they had to fit specific wiring so it 'talks to the car' when something is plugged in.

Is the issue that the bike rack wouldn't need the electric hook up so nothing to tell the car something is behind it?

Sorry it's a few years ago so have forgotten the specifics.
