Road tax expires today!

Hello

So my car tax is up today. It costs £200 because my car emits a high amount of CO2.

Anyway, I’ve completely forgotten and I don’t have £200 at this point in time to tax the car before midnight.

I know they send you a last chance letter if you have left it untaxed for 14 days, however, can I leave it untaxed for a few days and still drive it?

Legally no.

Can you do a DD monthly payment to reduce the impact upfront?

Sirzy · 31/03/2020 18:40

Can you not set it up to pay monthly?

SardineJam · 31/03/2020 18:41

Yep, monthly direct debit should be an option

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 31/03/2020 18:42

You can’t drive a non taxed car, it’s illegal

Why do you need to drive the next few days? Are you a key worker? If it’s for work not sure what say, if it’s shopping well you simply can’t go by car

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 31/03/2020 18:43

Also be aware stop can and do stop cars asking why your traveling...if they was for some reason to check your number plate it comes back no tax. What happens then? Can they take the car?

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 31/03/2020 18:43

*police

littleduckeggblue · 31/03/2020 18:44

Just pay monthly?!?

itsgettingweird · 31/03/2020 18:46

I remembered mine was due today too! Luckily it's £30 for year.

Forgot because I'm not actually using car atm as mostly wfh!

You can however do a DD for car tax which I did with my last car which had high tax.

fedup21 · 31/03/2020 18:47

Direct debit

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 31/03/2020 18:49

Do it online, pay monthly.

fourpeasinapod · 31/03/2020 18:50

Thanks all.
I hadn’t realised that paying by DD was an option for road tax.

I think you you have to have your car tax weather you dive it or not.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 31/03/2020 18:52

Whether 🙄

fourpeasinapod · 31/03/2020 18:54

Yeah I wasn’t sure if you had to or not but I’ve just found it it’s still illegal to leave it untaxed even if it’s just sitting in the driveway.

Think it needs to be declared SORN

OP posts:
Mascotte · 31/03/2020 18:54

Why not do it online?? I don’t understand

kilisibird · 31/03/2020 18:57

Just go online and tax it. Why do you need to SORN it?

user1353245678533567 · 31/03/2020 19:03

How quickly/easily can you un-SORN a vehicle to drive again if you SORN it?

AlunWynsKnee · 31/03/2020 19:05

Easy to unSORN online by paying the tax. Nothing else to do.

Knocksomesense · 31/03/2020 19:08

Yes, it's simple to declare a car as sorn

kilisibird · 31/03/2020 19:09

It's as easy to tax as it is to SORN though. So pointless.

fourpeasinapod · 31/03/2020 19:10

I’m not declaring the car SORN as I’m still using it.

I just meant that if you were to leave it untaxed it needs to be SORN’d

Hoping DD helps you op.

fourpeasinapod · 31/03/2020 19:28

Thank you @Peanut55

Set up a DD. Lots of towns have got ANPR cameras going in and out of them which check for tax/MOT etc

kevintheorangecarrot · 09/04/2020 21:51

Either set up a monthly DD or SORN it.
