Traditional girls dresses

Please does anyone know of a shop or company that sells traditional dresses for little girls? I have tried John Lewis today and they had a couple of really pretty designs but only in rather garish colours- not good on my 2 red-headed daughters! My girls are 4 5.

Zig Zag?

Don't know where/what it is, but have had a beautiful traditional style silk dress with lace collar and sash passed on to me, and the label inside says Zig Zag.

Children's Warehouse is very good. Excellent quality - will last for years. Beautiful nighties too.

Depends what you mean by "traditional" girls' dresses. Not sure what you're looking for.

KatieMac · 03/10/2004 05:04

If you are talking about Peter Pan collars, smocking and sashes - let me know when you find them.

I am so fed up of trawling the shops to find something that makes my DD (6yo but very tall) not look like a scrubber. Startright have just informed me that for next years school shoes they won't have anything in her size that is suitable for a 7yo.

Either the skirt is up round her bum or if the length is right you can get hold of handfuls of material at the waste or she can get reasonable fit in the 9-10 age but the styles are inappropriate

We have lots of these kinds of dresses and they came from ordinary High Street shops - John Lewis, M&S, Next etc. I also found TK Maxx to be a good source (and cheap!).

Maybe they were more in fashion when my DD1 was younger though. I never buy clothes for my younger girls, as it's all hand-me-downs.

Ebay is a good place for girls clothes - lots of the offerings are brand new.

I love old fashioned girls dresses with the smocking and collars. John Lewis is always a sure thing it you are near to one. Sometimes Marks' have them especially in the run up to Christmas.

Sarah Louise do beautiful dresses which many deparment stores will stock as well as the odd TK Maxx if you are prepared to hunt.

Ebay is another good source, I bid on a beautiful navy velevt one that was from marks originally that I think went for £6 in the end. Unfortunately i missed the closing time so missed out

sorry you have looked in lewis's!

aztecstore.com, www.tati.co.uk, la Redoute and Vertbaudet, rachel riley.

candy · 03/10/2004 16:55

Verbaudet have lovely ones. Boden's t-shirt top dresses are quite trad looking too. Laura Ashley tend to come uo v. short - no good for my long legged v skinny daughter!

marialuisa · 03/10/2004 21:23

Daisy and Tom's own label has lovely dresses. Very trad but not too fussy. Available online too.

soapbox · 03/10/2004 21:23

Debenhams usually has a good selection in their tigerlilly range. I've looked online but there is very little of the range on their website atm.

marialuisa · 03/10/2004 21:24

sorry-should have said that they'd suit those of you who want smocking etc. go up to age 9 I think.

pollyanna · 03/10/2004 21:36

Rachel Riley - very traditional, and very pricey! (available online)

woodpops · 04/10/2004 09:08

I've had a couple of lovely ones from Matalan. Lovely pale yellow with smocking.

woodpops · 04/10/2004 10:29

Did I say Matalan?? God only knows why I put that. I meant TK Max!!!!

marialuisa · 04/10/2004 11:28

just remembered that DD has some from Bonpoint and Young England but they're more for best than everyday.

KatieMac · 13/10/2004 09:39

I've given up and I am getting a dressmaker to make two pinafores.....
