Do you live in a 'very hard' water area and if so, what shampoo and conditioner have you found is best for your hair?

I'm sick of my dull, weighed down hair and feel it is time to invest in a better shampoo and conditioner. Can anyone recommend something? Do they work? Or do I have to start rinsing my hair with vinegar and rainwater?

Can you install a water softener instead? We live in a very hard water area, and the softener has made a massive difference.

Very hard water area here. After much experimentation, I've found 'Brilliant Brunette' stuff to be the best for my hair.

I don't want to install a water softener as I like our drinking water the way it is. The hair problem is my only issue with the hard water.
