Which stair gate?

we are moving to a house with stairs and will need to get a stair gate? which one is best? or best value for money?
are the cheap ones any good or is it worth spending extra for a branded one?

We will need 2...one for the top and one for the bottom...so cant afford the most expensive!

pressure ones or wall mounted?

are there any problems with stair gates that I should look out for?

any websites with god descriptions?

ikea we got these and there perfect there's no bar to step over so no chance of tripping and they do the job just as good as others.

also in wood but more expensive

Gloworm, we have found that the cheapest wall mounted stair gates from mothercare have stood the test of time. We also bought a more expensive, pressure fit one (Lindam I think) and ds1 (then age 2.5) worked out how to open it in 5 minutes! The cheap Mothercare ones we have are MUCH harder to open than the more expensive ones and therefore more resistant to a bright, determined toddler!

I do have one of the expensive "roller blind" style gates across the kitchen door. The Great Little Trading Co sell these. They are v expensive (£60), but I find a gate at the kitchen a godsend when I'm cooking, with 2 toddlers careering about. Because it "rolls away" when its not in use, my two can't swing on it or ram it into each others faces (as they did with the standard gate we had here).

Hope this all helps.

Same as fairydust, they're great as there's nothing to step over. They also fit fairly wide openings. Mine is BabyDan though (although it looks just the same).

Argos have something similar

is there much difference between the pressure-mounted and screw-fixed types? which is safest?

from memory ours is a safety first gate pressure mounted - no problems with that.
