Which Driver was at fault (video) ?

lljkk · 20/01/2020 19:29

NOT my video. Or my cars. But I drive this road regularly.
I think black car (VW Golf?) is at fault for being in wrong lane (far right of 3 lanes) as someone who obstensibly wanted to go 'straight' on. Or is white Fiat 500 wrong for pulling onto RAB when there was oncoming traffic...

What do you reckon?

Apologies for the shaky writing, but hopefully you can see the arrow in the right hand lane.

GenderfreeJoe · 20/01/2020 23:03

The white car was in the wrong lane. Although the black car could have prevented the accident.

thrree · 20/01/2020 23:05

White car at fault. Pulled onto the roundabout too slowly. Black car should of seen what was going on though.

Bufferingkisses · 20/01/2020 23:13

Ah yes, @longtompot is correct, the overhead view does show it is right only however the video footage shows it as straight over and right in that lane. I don't think the overhead and the video show the same roundabout?

VivaLeBeaver · 20/01/2020 23:20

The markings on the video are different to that overhead picture.

Superlooper · 20/01/2020 23:33

Black car 100%. White car going too slow but black car crossed into white car's lane. As pp said, should have moved to left hand lane after passing first exit.

WTAF?

MountainPeakGeek · 21/01/2020 00:07

I'd apportion more blame to the driver of the black car than the white one, imho.

The driver of the white car shouldn't have pulled out when they did but I can see why they would have thought, from the black car's positioning, that it wasn't going to be taking the exit he did.

The driver of the black car was an absolutely abysmal driver to have not read what was happening enough in advance to move into the correct lane sooner, slow down a bit and just calmly slot in behind the the white car, thereby exiting the roundabout totally safely, instead of trying to cut in front.

So, yes, the driver of the white car made a minor mistake, but the driver of the black car was either driving like an aggressive knob or someone with no anticipation skills at all.

MountainPeakGeek · 21/01/2020 00:09

that it wasn't going to be taking the exit he it did

although I bet it was a male driver Grin

thrree · 21/01/2020 06:34

@Lweji focus on the white car from the time it comes into the shot. When it pulled off it was clear but for some reason it didn't accelerate away. You'll see it actually pulled away at the same time as a motorbike who was well clear of the collision.

Lweji · 21/01/2020 07:05

The white car doesn't have to accelerate. It enters the roundabout with plenty of time and goes about their business on their own lane.
It's stupid of the black car to think everyone else will clear their way.

elf1985 · 21/01/2020 07:16

The ndr was at fault. Stupid road layout, too may lanes!

needanewnamechange · 21/01/2020 07:17

The white car was on the far left and cut across to the right . The black car should have been in the lane more to the left .
Both are wrong as should be looking and indicating earlier that's why so many accidents but I'd say the white car more in the wrong .

Lweji · 21/01/2020 07:32

The white car is still on the far left lane when it's cut by the black.

JeffreysWorkTrousers · 21/01/2020 07:57

I know I am going against popular opinion but the black car pulled across too many lanes to turn left. In my opinion he should have moved over to the middle lane after the left hand turning.

This is why a huge motorway entry roundabout near me has markings guiding you over (spiral roundabout) due to lane cutting.

I wouldn't care that someone has marked the road sayng the right hand lane is also straight on, I wouldn't be in it. The second video shows how mad it is to go from the right hand lane, cut lanes and turn left.

I agree highways should change that marking to right lane only.

I have been driving 20+ years but have been watching a lot of driving instructor videos recently as Ds1 is about to turn 17 and will be practising in my car once he reaches a particular level of competence.

AmelieTaylor · 23/01/2020 17:19

FMD

The Lane markings are ridiculous, like many around here (SE) they’re inviting accidents, BUT, DRIVERS ALL need to be aware of what’s going on around them. Being right is less important than being alive.

misskick · 23/01/2020 17:50

White car is at fault and road poorly marked

DripDrip · 23/01/2020 18:56

As a Solicitor who once specialised in this kinda work it's a clear 50/50% liability. The black car ought to have been in the middle lane for that exit and the withe car joined when it wasn't safe to do so. It would not have been unreasonable for the black car to think it was heading for the same exit.

I know specialise in employers and public liability. That's a whole lot of different fun.

lljkk · 25/01/2020 12:38

Thanks for replies(!) Having driven thru the RAB since, I'm more & more minded to blame the White car driver. But given that black car driver still did idiot things.

OP posts:
lljkk · 25/01/2020 12:39

ps: a thing about these RABs is that you can't go that fast into or around RAB in the left-most lane. The RABs/lanes are too round, left most lane is much further journey than interior lanes, hence why Black car went for inner-most lane, black car literally didn't want a longer journey on the RAB.
