Which kids' scooters would you recommend?

LauraEMumsnet · 13/01/2020 14:45

Hi everyone,

We're making plans to test and review the best scooters on the market (for toddlers and children aged 5+), and we'd love to hear your favourites.

Which scooters have you been impressed by over the last couple of years? And are there any features or plus points that you paid particular attention to when buying one?

Your comments will help us to create a shortlist of scooters to test out and, ultimately, recommend to parents.

Thanks in advance! Flowers

100% micro scooters , we've had them for years. Dd10 has the micro sprite at the moment , still going strong.

Starstruck2020 · 14/01/2020 12:06

Definitely micro. DD 14’s is still going strong, which she got when she was 7. I’m sure DD’s 11 is as well..... with whoever stole it Hmm

SheShriekedShrilly · 14/01/2020 12:11

Micro Sprite (had it from 4yo, never did the three wheel ones) - I think they’re indestructible. My older dd uses her less now, but DH has taken it over!

AlfieandAnnieRose · 14/01/2020 12:58

Definitely micro scooter, bought one when my son was 3. He loves it and when he’s feeling lazy I can just push him on it😄
would’ve bought one earlier if I’d known how great they are, the little ones are cute with the seat ☺️

Pimmsypimms · 14/01/2020 13:53

We had the mini micro and it was amazing, really helped my ds with his confidence, he loved it!
He is now 7 and he had a Razor Beast V6 Stunt scooter and he likes it but says it's a bit noisy (it does rattle) I think I expected a bit better for the price I paid tbh, it doesn't seem to be that smooth.

inwood · 14/01/2020 14:49

Micros all the way.

Choosername · 14/01/2020 15:44

Wow. You’re not going to have much choice to write about are you...it’s between a micro scooter and a micro scooter.

Well, some people can’t afford or don’t believe in the micro scooter hype, and these 3 have been brilliant quality and not hard on the bank balance for us:

Early learning centre 3 wheeler tilt scooter, ideal from age 2-5 yrs. Used for about 6 years by 2 kids, no breakage and really light and easy to handle. Quiet wheels.

Iscoot, three wheeler scooter. Foldable. Quiet wheels. Easy to handle and can build up good speed and be in control. Used this for about 8 years now, and still going strong. Age 5-10 I’d say. Handlebars can be changed as child grows.

Evo 2 wheeler alloy scooter. Ideal for older kids. Quiet wheels. Foldable. Really smooth ride and extremely light. Handle bars can change as child grows.

Quiet smooth wheels is what is important I think. I hate that rattly sound with some scooters.

Micro, the ones made in switzerland

moggle · 14/01/2020 17:00

When our daughter outgrew her mini micro we couldn’t justify another micro, even second hand the price was excessive when most needed new wheels or handlebar grips, plus we couldn’t find any in green. We got one from “3stylescooter” (the 5+ size) on amazon and have been really pleased with it. It has the features of the deluxe micro scooters - folds up and led wheels but was only £50 and she got the colour she wanted. Best thing is that you can buy new parts for them online just like the micro scooters so I’m sure it’ll last well and we’ll be able to pass it on to DD’s younger brothers.

Wigeon · 14/01/2020 17:28

Yet another vote for the Micro - ours have lasted years and years and years.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/01/2020 17:31

Oxelo from Decathlon. They've been fantastic

Weekday28 · 14/01/2020 18:53

We brought a globber at xmas for our daughter. It's been a big hit.

leccybill · 14/01/2020 19:12

Micro and maxi scooter- they're amazing.
Our school won 30 a few years ago, they have been battered daily by 200 children, and not one has broken, rattled, or needed fixing. They are indestructible!

MeOnSea · 14/01/2020 19:22

My then 3-year-old started off with a Zycon three-wheeler with light up wheels, recommended by a local skate shop. She loved whizzing around on it. For Christmas she has just graduated to this one from Decathlon, which she’s loving and the brake is a useful addition www.decathlon.co.uk/mid5-scooter-indian-girl-id_8520770.html

Zebrasinpyjamas · 14/01/2020 21:54

I love the light up led wheels on my dc's micro maxi . I think they make it much more visible when we scoot on the school run in the dark.

starlight36 · 15/01/2020 09:28

Micro scooters seem to be the standard here. We have had them and they are great but if you get one you might need to personalise it s but to make sure it doesn't get mixed up with all of the other ones.

As an aside we sold both of ours on eBay snd hit great prices for them - one advantage of them being so popular.

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 15/01/2020 10:03

Ds had a micro maxi that lasted for 3 years until it was outgrown, still in perfect condition with no annoying rattles and he now has a 2 wheel micro sprite scooter. Again, a very smooth ride with no rattles and noise and it's good for tricks (bunny hops, etc). The 2 wheeler is also very lightweight. Ds has had it for over a year now and rides it to school everyday so it's pretty hard wearing too.

I would never buy a cheaper scooter after having micro scooters. When the maxi was outgrown we sold it on for a decent amount which helped to fund the Sprite.

Novina · 15/01/2020 10:28

Can't beat the micro mini for toddlers and young children. Simple, well-made and sturdy with the 3-wheel design.

Once they'd outgrown that, our favourite was the JD Bug foldable Street Scooter:

www.skatehut.co.uk/brands/jd-bug/jd-bug-original-street-scooter-silver.htm

Well made, adjustable from children to adult, and folds up small with handy shoulder strap. Great for us as we don't have a car and rely on buses/trains. It means the kids can scoot between house/bus/train/destination and don't get so tired.

Cheap scooters that were given as gifts just didn't last and would have been a false economy.

Hi

Not sure if being a new mom I’m just worrying..

My daughter is 10 days old but taking over an hour to take each bottle is this normal ? Or should I go up to a fast flow teat ? By the time I’ve given her a bottle she’s ready for the next... help !!!

Solasum · 15/01/2020 15:53

Mini Micro scooter lasted us 4 years and Maxi micro has done a year of daily abuse and still going strong. Think the Mini micro is actually more robust though annoyingly.

@DG4491 - think you posted on the wrong thread/topic?

anothermansmother · 16/01/2020 07:03

Definitely the micro, so far we've had the mini, then the maxi and then the two wheeler. Really robust, and high adjustable. My daughters is till going strong 5 years in and she still hasn't outgrown it as the handles adjust properly. My ds has just outgrown his (5'10" at thirteen) and was really sad about it until we found they do an adult version.

cucumbershed · 16/01/2020 11:19

We got toddler the John Lewis own brand scooter. It's well made and a total hit, especially the light up wheels! I don't understand the hype over micro scooters, nor can I justify spending that much when a small child doesn't give a fig about the brand! Older DC had a cheap one from Toys r us years ago which survived the battering they gave it but was (unfortunately!) passed on a while ago.

Blackbear19 · 16/01/2020 13:15

Looking at the John Lewis scooters they are remarkably similar to the Globbers, without the Globber badge.

The Mini micro has a lower handle height or the O bar which makes it more suited to short toddlers than the Globber. It's also lighter in weight.

My DC1 had a My First Scooter which was ok in 3 and 4 wheel mode but useless as a 2 wheel. That said DC2 gets on much better with the Mini micro than DC1 did with his.

I'll see how DC2 gets on with them both in a year or so time when he is big enough for the standard handle on the micro and will be tall enough for the Globber.
(I hate that name too)
