I am looking for a small 3-4 year old economical petrol SUV. 2 passengers mostly with the occasional transport of elderly parents or camping equipment. Any recommendations?

Mini Countryman.

I live in aaistralia and here Vauxhall is called Holden. I had one and had issues after issue including a head gasket leak which the garage kept hidden from me until fed up I asked a frownd’s Di Who is a mechanic to have a look at it. He said Holdens alaways have issues and that in 20 years he’s hardly ever seen a Toyota, he swears they are the best and that Holden/ Vauxhall are shit.
I now happily drive a RAV4

iforgotthatyouexisted · 04/01/2020 17:56

I'm always told but Japanese and that Toyota are the best option. The newer RAV-4s are quite big though.

I've had two Vauxhalls and not had a problem with either.

After I posted this I checked other threads and found the Mokka is universally hated! So that is off the list. @TDL2016 funnily enough we already have a mini - our third one and we have loved all of them. So a Countryman may just be the thing to go for.

We had a Vauxhall Crossland X as a hire car at Xmas and it was ok to drive but boot seemed small.

CottonSock · 04/01/2020 18:02

Mazda mx3.

Why an suv?

holdthefrontpage · 04/01/2020 18:27

Nothing but trouble with our 4 year old Nissan Qashqai. Avoid.

SansaClegane · 04/01/2020 18:41

Why would anyone ever need a 'small SUV'? Confused there are literally no benefits to them. None of them are economical. Tax will be higher as they emit more. Why not get a small/medium hatchback instead? You're much more likely to find something economical and cheap to run, at a good price.

Would steer clear of Vauxhall of any kind, mind you.

LeGrandBleu · 05/01/2020 07:23

My car, Toyota RAV4 , is classified as a small suv in Australia! You wouldn't believe the size of the cars they drive down under!

The OP said she needed to transport camping equipment and when you go camping you need a BIG boot!

Xiaoxiong · 05/01/2020 07:31

I have a Vauxhall Astra estate and the boot is bigger than basically any compact SUV I've ever seen. Never had any trouble with it either (bought for 3k cash and have only ever had to change the oil as standard). We manage to get a family of 4, food and luggage for a week in a SC cottage and a dog in there with no roofbox.

foxatthewindow · 05/01/2020 07:37

I’m not sure what you mean by small but I love our VW Tiguan (which is basically a fat golf. They do a smaller version called the T-roc which might be worth a look. I had a mokka-x as a hire car once and it was appalling

Funf · 05/01/2020 10:31

Berlingo

Skidarmy · 05/01/2020 19:32

I love our Kuga. Nice ride height, big enough boot for pram and shopping. Good mpg and good for older passengers as it's easy for them to get in and out of. My 79 yo dad had a hip replacement and loves the rid of this. You can add additional space up top with a luggage pack for your camping trips too.

AnotherEmma · 05/01/2020 19:35

Why oh why does it have to be an SUV?
There are plenty of estate cars and even some hatchbacks with spacious boots.
Can't bear the obsession with SUVs.
If you really do need 4wd and good clearance because you do lots of off-road driving, fair enough.
But the vast majority of SUV drivers don't.

FordPrefect42 · 05/01/2020 19:36

Mitsubishi ASX is quite small.

Lifecraft · 06/01/2020 13:27

Mazda mx3.

Is a small 2 door coupe that they stopped making in 1998.
